About this listen

In her hilarious New York Times best seller You’ll Never Blue Ball in This Town Again, Heather McDonald recounted her adventures as an unwilling virgin in Hollywood. Now happily married with three wonderful kids, she shows that life as a grown-up - even a pretend grown-up - has its challenges. Heather’s a working mom with parents who live next door, a sister who keeps asking for one of her still-fertile eggs, and friends who are up to more hijinks than even Heather can handle.

This self-proclaimed "Real Housewife of Woodland Hills" is determined to achieve A-list status (thus expanding her entourage beyond her three school-aged children and a house-husband who is infuriatingly bad at collecting neighborhood gossip) and defeat (or at least be accepted by) the mean neighborhood moms who judge her for taking her kids to a stripper pool party in Vegas. It’s a lot to juggle when she’s also battling her Chelsea Lately coworkers for the crudest and most elaborate practical jokes (don’t ask her about that "free" Vera Wang dress).

Just as laugh-out-loud funny and irreverent in her storytelling as she is on camera as Chelsea Handler’s partner-in-crime, in My Inappropriate Life Heather recounts her misadventures with a disarming candor all her own.

Editorial reviews

Editors Select, February 2013 - Heather McDonald is hilarious. And whenever I make that statement it’s usually followed up by, “Who is Heather McDonald?” Anyone who watches E!’s Chelsea Lately will instantly recognize her as Chelsea’s brunette sidekick who often appears on the show’s 3-person round table of stand-up comedians. Heather is also one of the show’s writers and producers – and I categorize her talent to be on par with the Chelsea’s, Tina’s and Amy’s of the funny-woman world. As soon as I got my hands on the My Inappropriate Life manuscript I devoured it over the course of a weekend – and although it highlights Heather’s life as a wife and mother, I found my single, child-less self-concealing my laughter for all to hear in the subway car those two days. Each chapter is its own self-contained incident – perfect for “nuggetized” listening in short spurts. With chapters titled “Craigslisting for Family Pool Parties,” “The Real Housewives of Woodland Hills” and “One Nipple Out the Door” it’s hard to not get pulled into Heather’s totally relatable yet out of this world whirlwind charm. Her narration is icing on the cake. Jessica, Audible Editor

Critic reviews

"Most moms that you work with come to your desk uninvited and start showing you photos or telling you boring stories about their kids.... Not Heather McDonald. Instead she shows me photos of her new pool." (Jen Kirkman, author of I Can Barely Take Care of Myself)
"I don’t know any other person who can tell me they are ‘over trees’, mean it, make me laugh about it, and at the same time make me wonder if perhaps I am, too." (Sarah Colonna, author of Life as I Blow It)

A collection of Heather's funniest tales of existing as a thirsty writer back in the Chelsea days. I laughed so hard at so many stories. This is an excellent and relaxing listen.

Would you listen to My Inappropriate Life again? Why?

I might. It made me laugh out loud. I especially liked the Facebook story. Pretty darn hilarious.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I wasn't ready for it to end. I felt like I was losing a really super cool friend.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yeah, I listened to it in 2 days.

Any additional comments?

As much as she tried to make Chelsea Handler look good I really don't think I would be able to tolerate her. I don't care how many trips she paid for her staff, she seems like she thinks she is way more important than she actually is.

I really liked the part where someone said it was totally fine that her son prefers the Ipad to actual writing. Every kid is different and it seems like at least a few people in her life are giving her sound advice.

Pretty Fun Listen!

Being as I never read Heather McDonald's first book, she definitely became note-worthy after reading this book. No longer is she the girl from Chelsea Lately but she is Heather McDonald - you know the Heather McDonald who snapped on her son for overreacting to her crumbling warm-fresh-out-of-the-oven cookies. That Heather.

Great read. It isn't overly funny - but what makes it appropriately funny is how relatable she and her stories are. Must read her first book asap now!

Appropriately Funny

The stories are funny! The book wasn't read all that well. Not for the money paid for the audio book. When you make a mistake while reading for the listener and your being paid to do so why not correct the mistake? Other than that the book was what I expected. Would recommend it to a fan.

Yes, I couldn't stop listening to it. It was filled with entertaining stories and was well written.

Any additional comments?

It's too bad it wasn't longer.
