New York Times bestselling author Catherine Ryan Hyde returns with a hopeful novel of sacrifice, two lost souls, and enduring love.
It’s 1965, and life has taken a turn for eighteen-year-old Anton Addison-Rice. Nearly a year after his brother died in a tragic accident, Anton is still wounded - physically and emotionally. Alone for the holidays, he catches a glimpse of his neighbor Edith across the street one evening and realizes that she’s in danger.
Anton is determined to help Edith leave her abusive marriage. Frightened and fifteen years Anton’s senior, Edith is slow to trust. But when she needs a safe place to stay, she lets down her guard, and over the course of ten days an unlikely friendship grows. As Anton falls hopelessly and selflessly in love, Edith fears both her husband finding her and Anton getting hurt. She must disappear without telling anyone where she’s going - even Anton.
If keeping Edith safe means letting her go, Anton will say goodbye forever. Or so he believes. What would happen, though, if one day their paths should cross again?

Critic reviews
"Crouch's endearing performance allows listeners to immerse themselves in this imperfectly sweet love story." - AudioFile Magazine
"A heartwarming story spanning decades of shared trials and personal growth, [Hyde’s] latest will appeal to her loyal readers and fans of Hazel Prior, Erica Bauermeister, and HBO’s recent series Run." - Booklist
"Readers who want tales of love, family, and emotional strength in the face of hardship will cheer on Anton, Edith, and their efforts to create a family in the midst of pain. A great choice for fans of Hyde and a fine introduction to Hyde’s brand of uplifting [stories] of people thrown together by chance and united by love." - Library Journal

Michael Crouch IS the voice of Anton. Ms Hyde write a story of love, sorrow and happiness. Everything in between. The love Anton has for Edith made me think of and appreciate my husband who loves me like this. I’m a lucky woman. This is a wonderful book and listening to the soft soothing voice of Mr Crouch made it all the better.

Wonderful characters

And I must thank Michael Crouch. It's the narrator who can bring a book alive or deaden any emotional relevance intended by the author. I now search for other audio books read by Michael.
Wow! Engaging with honor

An awesome novel!

I even loved the ending. So many times I feel like readers are left hanging but in this case all the loose ends were tied up in a very believable way.
Excellent story, outstanding performance

Not my usual

I was ready to quit listening after a few chapters because of the (too) SLOW, very draggy narration.
I hate abandoning books after I’ve started them,
so I speeded it up.
First I tried listening at 1.3 speed, then bumped it up to 1.4.
That was a very good speed to listen to this.
That guy just reads like thick molasses TRYING to flow downhill.
Great story
