About this listen

From celebrated New York Times best-selling author and winner of the Pulitzer Prize Rick Bragg comes a poignant and wryly funny collection of essays on life in the South. Keenly observed and written with his insightful and deadpan sense of humor, Bragg explores enduring Southern truths about home, place, spirit, table, and the regions' varied geographies, including his native Alabama, Cajun country, and the Gulf Coast. Everything is explored, from regional obsessions with college football and fishing to mayonnaise and spoonbread to the simple beauty of a fish on the hook. Collected from over a decade of his writing, with many never-before-published essays written specifically for this edition, My Southern Journey is an entertaining and engaging listen, especially for Southerners (or Southerners at heart) and anyone who appreciates great writing.

Critic reviews

"Rick Bragg says Southern storytellers speak as if they're slowly chewing each word, savoring the sound and meaning. And that's just the way he presents this collection of his published essays.... His use of metaphor and rich descriptions comes across especially effectively when spoken." (AudioFile)

Good, though perhaps overly sentimental at times

Good, a little overly sentimental at times. Some of strongest pieces are in the last chapter when he writes about southern football and race, and the legacy and love of Alabama football ( and I am not even much of a football, college or pro, fan). When I started the book, I wasn't sure I would finish it, but am glad I did, if simply for the last few stories.

Song of the South ~

As warm and soothing as hot buttered syrup poured over a stack of pancakes by a waitress named Kitty at a hole-in-the-wall small-town Southern diner. How I got my age of 68, 44 of them spent with a whip-smart preacher's daughter from SC, without discovering Rick Bragg, I just don't understand. But that's fixed now. I liked this audio book so well I bought the real one, as I think Rick would like since he, like my sweet Marie, has a level of reverence for them that I have for old car parts. I bought it for that reason, and so that I could flip to favorite passages without endless searches on my iPhone. And I'm glad I did.
But I wouldn't want to read them that way without having first heard Mr. Bragg's elocution of his seamlessly-crafted words. I recommend the same double-shot of Southern comfort for you, wherever you hail from.

Melodious

If you even think you might be interested in the South a little bit, you want to read this book. Or at least listen to it. And if you are Southern, it will make you fall in love with the South all over again.Rick Bragg‘s voice is so Southern it will make you feel Southern too, I believe. He talks about sports, food, and lots of interesting people. I believe if you give it a chance, you will really be mesmerized and you will really enjoy it.

Rick Bragg’s writing is magical!

Loved these stories and loved listening g to Rick Bragg read them.
The mastery of his descriptive writing puts a smile on my face as I walk alone down the street, passers by wondering if I am crazy. But I don’t care! I loved these stories and will continue to listen again.
Thank you, Rick Bragg, for for your talent to write so beautifully. I feel like I truly have lived in the south.

My Favorite Author

Though my family hails from Eastern KY, Rick's stories remind me of the stories told by my own kin. Sitting on the porch snapping beans with my Grt grandmother and the other women in my family. wooden screen doors banging open and shut by the children. Conversations and stories overheard from the men. After dinner, or just over coffee while sitting around a great table in the kitchens. Not yet understanding the intense conversations over politics and EKU basketball. Red dirt, Old Hollows, Sturdy built homes, and Women that worked as hard as the men. Rick's story strike a true chord in my heart, and my memories eye. The accent wins me over, every time.

So sorry the book ended, I’m starting it over

I need something to occupy my mind while I waltz the hills of NW Georgia. “My Southern Journey” is perfectly engaging.

While my family was banished to Atlanta for marginal existence following the devastation of scorched earth Sherman, our families of the era may well have run into one another, and certainly would have known my husband’s family just before the Depression. Bragg’s recollections hit home.

His voice is comforting. He sounds like home.

You know what they say about northeastern Alabama: If the good Lord comes tomorrow and you aren’t ready, run to Piedmont. You’ll have ten more years. I think it’s because the people are so sweet there.

If the reader is familiar with the Florida Panhandle —- and what true Atlantan is not? —- and Fairhope and Mobile and Tuscaloosa and Tampa, a shared sense of recognition gladdens the heart. Bragg just says it so much better!

One tiny little bit of discord: WAR DANG EAGLE!

Refreshingly Genuine. Great "comfort book"

This is a guy I would like to meet. No matter one's background, he can teach us something fun to learn. Full disclosure: 56 years in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Turns out you can polish a turd!

I never thought I would hear so many positive opinions about the South that I would agree with. This book really is a love story about the dirty-dirty, I'd recommend it to anyone/everyone, especially other people who hold a very low opinion of the South. You might change your mind about a few things, I did.
