About this listen

The hardships of war and the perseverance of humans.

I liked the love stories intervowen in between the reality of war. This is a beautiful book from beginning to end.

Great research done!

Truly enjoyable story, with historic bits. The German and Tswana words great to hear, even thow not well pronounced, still had an emotional effect on the reader!

Endurance against adversity.

This is a stunningly researched book. It's grueling the listen through the long march of death or let's rather call it, the thinning out process that the Russian army practiced to separating the weak ones from the strong ones. Even the POW camps was a dreadful eye opener. This reached a climax for me when the author explained how the returning German pow soldiers experienced rejection from the very country they fought for. The auther used this backdrop as the grinding mill that would transformed one of the main characters from an arrogant and prideful person to someone with character who is able to appreciate good qualities in another character that he might not even have thought of looking at in another lifetime.....I hope this doesn't give away too much of the plot.

Goeie storielyn

Aangenaam verras. Verteller se vroulike rolle was minder oortuigend en het soms 'n robot stemtoon gehad.

Excellent story

Irma Joubert brilliantly told the 2 stories of the 2 men on opposite sides of World War II. The reader assumes that their paths would cross. At times this seems almost impossible, yet the 2 stories evolve quite realistically and believably to end on a farm in Africa. Excellently told, set in respective milieu and events that were thoroughly researched and expertly woven into the book. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The narration is quite good, although a little more could have been made of the various European accents.

Pragtig

My gunsteling Afrikaanse skrywer.
