About this listen

What do you do when the only skill you ever learned was how to kill, when you’re among the best of the best, but they tell you you can’t do that anymore? What do you do when they send you home from Afghanistan and tell you to get a job, like everybody else?

But you’re not like everybody else.

After eight years as a trooper in the SAS, fighting the secret, untold wars in the deserts and the jungles of the world, Harry Bauer has been kicked out for attempting to assassinate Mohammed Ben Amini, the Butcher of Al-Landy. He’s been sent home to New York, where he was raised an orphan 'til he was old enough to split and join the special forces.

Now he’s back, and unemployed—until Russian Mafia boss Peter Rusanov offers him a job wiping out the Albanian Mafia. It’s a job he figures could make him rich, until Colonel Jane Harris shows up, takes him for a ride to Pleasantville, and tells him about Cobra.

Then all hell breaks loose.

Jack Reacher meets Matt Helm

Jack Reacher meets Matt Helm (not the Dean Martin parody)! It was a fun listen that made a road trip pass quickly. We hope the author will also revive his Dead Cold Mystery series.

Bureaucracy

Good story ... sad government
action vs indecision
American James Bond delightfully rough around the edges

the action.

A plausible story line with great action. Loved the interchange and the numerous covert groups.

Fast story

Had to leave a review because it has been awhile since I listened to a book that kept my attention. Fast paced and would like to say fun storyline but with all the killing can I say that? You won’t be sorry to get this book.

WOW

This was fairly Simple and Straightforward.... which in no way diminishes the story. I sincerely look forward to the next installment. Complaints? maybe one..... it was too short😁 RAY PORTER you did it again, introduced me to a new author!

If u like spies & contact killers this is for you

Too many killings for me!! It is fast paced and bloody, but still a good story. Espionage reigns!

Great start!

wow! This is another great start to a series (hopefully) being read by Ray Porter. I really enjoy his work. I will have to say his female voices don’t exactly come off as sexy or sultry.

Tremendous; Banner Knows His Stuff

I was worried at first about the British/American crossover angle of the plot, but Banner makes it work pretty well. There is some creative license on the technical side, but the mention of the Fairbairn-Sikes knife clinched this series for me. The Fairbairn knife is to the SAS what the K-Bar is to the American infantry, and details like that are impressive.

Story lacking

Delivery was superb, but the story was lacking. A little more character development would have gone a long way to making this a 5-star book. The action was there, but nothing made sense. Bauer literally flys to one country after another murdering agency personnel and this was all okay with everyone? And having Bauer have a lover murdered that he might have been falling in love with per his admission leaving him distraught only to fall for and into the bed of another woman with no thought for the woman he allowed to be murdered about a half second earlier was jarring. Speaking of jarring, the book ended so abruptly and without tying up a single loose end that it left me going “Wait. It ended? Did I miss the end?” Honestly, I could barely tell you what the book is about after listening to the entire thing and parts of it multiple times.
