The book draws its inspiration from stoicism, the ancient Greek philosophy of enduring pain or adversity with perseverance and resilience. Stoics focus on the things they can control, let go of everything else, and turn every new obstacle into an opportunity to get better, stronger, tougher. As Marcus Aurelius put it nearly 2000 years ago: “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.”

Win-win negotiations play to your emotions and take advantage of your instinct and desire to make the deal. Start with No introduces a system of decision-based negotiation that teaches you how to understand and control these emotions.

When two unrelated things come together, something new springs into existence; they form a third thing, and that becomes a new idea. That’s Crossover Creativity. The more you read, watch, observe, and consume, the more fuel for ideas you have in your brain and the more crossover creativity will happen for you. In this latest collection of stories about creativity in real-life situations, Dave Trott presents examples of crossover creativity in action–as a guide for those who have to generate ideas in advertising, business, sport, or anywhere in the wider world.

Story
What is “being geeky?” It’s being a perennially curious person, one who's not afraid to tackle hard problems and embrace unconventional solutions. McAfee shows how the geeks have created a new culture based around four norms: science, ownership, speed, and openness. The geek way seems odd at first. It's not deferential to experts, fond of planning and process, afraid of mistakes, or obsessed with "winning." But it explains everything from why Montessori babies turn out to be creative tinkerers to how newcomers are disrupting industry after industry (and still just getting started).

To dive into Notes to Myself is one of those rare experiences that comes only once in a great while. The editor who discovered the book said, "When I first read Prather's manuscript it was late at night and I was tired, but by the time I finished it, I felt rested and alive. Since then I've reread it many times and it says even more to me now." The book serves as a beginning for the listener's exploration of his or her own life and as a treasury of thoughtful and insightful reminders.

100% worth your time if you are in the job search
Rob's perspective is on-target and feels like a drink of fresh water in the chaffing experience of a job search. There are a few fantastic takeaways that you really should hear from his perspective. I will share a couple of points here: 1) Be clear on your North Star (it's been a few weeks since my listen, so I won't say more than that 2) Write a cover letter that shows you understand the company, role, how your skills line-up and your passion for the job! You might think this takes too long -- but if you are clear on your target -- this is how you will get a shot at an interview. 3) Don't sit back and wait for HR; do what you need to do to get your shot! Again, it's been a few weeks since my listen, and I will return to this title again. It is an instant job-hunt classic. -JP

Best Job Inspiration
I loved both the practical advice that includes specific steps for updating your LinkedIn profile, resume, crafting the perfect cover letter and creating a list of target companies. The book also includes advice on salary negotiation which I will have to listen to again when I get a job offer. I also enjoyed the inspiration advice, as it’s so easy to feel lost during a time when you’re in between jobs.
