About this listen

Journeys that begin in brokenness rarely follow a straight road to healing. There are twists and turns - and setbacks - on the path of repentance.

Night Driving tells the story of a pastor and seminary professor whose moral failures destroyed his marriage and career, left his life in ruins, and sent him spiraling into a decade-long struggle against God. Forced to fight the demons of his past in the cab of the semi-truck he drove at night through the Texas oil fields, Chad Bird slowly began to limp toward grace and healing.

Drawing on his expertise as an Old Testament scholar, Bird weaves together his own story, the biblical story, and the stories of fellow prodigals as he peels back the layers of denial, anger, addiction, and grief to help listeners come face-to-face both with their own identities and with the God who alone can heal them.

Chad Bird tells his story. He pulls no punches. Chad made mistakes and then owns those mistakes on the path to forgiveness. I lost myself in the audio version. So, so good. I cried, I smiled, and I thought. Wow. What a book! Listen to this book. Then, listen again! Thank you, Chad.

Amazing story of loss and forgiveness!!

Refreshing and encouraging to hear raw truth, no fluff, no filter. He talks about the church I know in my heart. Come to me all who weary and heavy burdened and I( the Lord) will give you rest!

This audiobook was just what I needed this year. I felt God was far away. I felt as if I was going through the motions. Brother Chad Bird gave his own relatable, personal testimony of the thoughts of a prodigal soul, and how Jesus is always there. Present. Relatable. Loving. The Shepherd of our soul. Our Savior. Our Redeemer. The one running toward us when we cease our wanderings and make our way back home.

Relatable

This autobiographical book is a synopsis of Chad Bird's journey from extreme highs to devastating lows in his personal and professional (seminary professor) life. I found it to be very engaging and the parallels between his life and Scripture as he runs from and to God. He holds nothing back.

Trevor Thompson has the perfect voice to narrate the story.

While this is a religious account, it is not 'in your face' or judgmental. Thought-provoking is the phrase that comes to mind...

Chad Bird helps show that Christ is not just a cherub-faced God. He is the Almighty, and He will do whatever it takes to save us, especially if it means breaking us.

This is a very good book and have to listen all the way. We see ourselves for who we really are, sinners. But best of all we hear of the Lord who loves, redeems, and saves us by his love and grace.

Prodigal Soul

Chad Bird went from having everything perfect in his life, being a pastor, a professor at a seminary, a husband, and father. But he was pushing himself too hard. His perfect exterior started to crumble.

This book is post-fall. He had two failed marriages and many reasons to give up faith. But as he says the nice thing about becoming a truck driver is you have lots of time to your thoughts.
Liberation is often difficult for the captive. It is hard for them to break with the world they know. Bird talks about his long struggle with God over his sins and how he felt forsaken.
"You have been a good steward of pain." you can either take the good and bad in life together, or you can take throw pity parties.
This book is raw and honest about Bird's fall from grace, while falling into grace. He talks about the prodigal son, but most of this book is similar to the Psalms where one man is looking to understand.
