2023 Selah Award Finalist

Kelsey dreams of a life filled with creativity.
She's about to stumble into far more than she imagined...

Kelsey Willoughby doesn’t have time to pursue her dream of writing a novel. Imagination doesn’t pay the bills, and she’s busy saving her beautiful bookshop from online competition, hotel developers, and the sneaking suspicion that nobody reads anymore.

Not to mention all those voices telling her she doesn’t have talent.

But then the vacant lot of weeds next door starts to shimmer.

When Kelsey stumbles into a luminous nighttime garden party, larger than the vacant lot that holds it and filled with enigmatic guests, she suspects they hold the key to saving the bookshop, and perhaps even to her own mysterious origins.

But answers aren’t forthcoming, not until Kelsey is willing to confront her past, step into her potential, and push deeper into the unknown edges of the garden, where an unexpected journey takes her into a world of dangerous revelation.

Imaginative and Inspirational

Delightful and encouraging to all creatives. I enjoyed the storyline very much but my heart and mind were captured by the garden.

Magical story

I was mesmerized by Kelsey’s journey to find beauty, courage, and love and to fight through the challenges that might stop her. I would recommend this book to those who would like to find encouragement to do the same.

Underwhelming predictable.

It was a listening that I had to work to make to the end. The narrator did fine job reading. Overall it was scattered. What was the purpose of going deeper and experiencing the moment in Egypt it felt just thrown. The end where it all worked out while nice uplifting was akin to the authors reference to you got mail. She meets the hotel in the middle and everyone wins. Her sculpture boyfriend was shallow not enough of his story. But on the plus side the author encapsulated everything thought about my own writing. I admire the sheer dedication to put this book out come what may. I was inspired to put some of my own ideas to paper or computer. I can give her that.

Seamless World Weaving Blurs Reality & Comments on Creativity and Life

Higley weaves worlds seamlessly, building suspense as she blurs the lines of reality and intermingles philosophy on creativity and life. I thoroughly enjoyed this encouraging tale and its satisfying resolution. I also experienced audio glitches with the ends of the first two chapters cutting off. After I contacted customer service, I believe they resolved the issue because that did not continue in later chapters as I finished listening to the book.

Inspiring for Creatives

I thought Nightfall was beautifully written and a story inspiring for those us that are creators that will likely never sell their work. My only criticism is that the author’s reading was almost breathless and I had to slow the audio down- honestly I’m not sure I would have continued beyond the first chapter if I hadn’t also downloaded the book on kindle! I’m so glad I carried on - I’m still thinking of that magical garden! 💕

Don’t love the narration

Despite technical issues, the writing is lovely, but perhaps
the author should’ve chosen another to narrate. There’s some thing missing in the telling of the story.

All Creatives Must Read This!

I have nothing but praise for this book. It’s more than a book. It’s an anthem designed to inspire writers, poets, artists, musicians, etc. Higley has helped me to see that we all must go deeper, and what we produce must be seen as gifts! When I finished the last page, I closed the book and saw myself for what I truly am - a storyteller. Thank you Tracy Higley, for your gift to us!

A unique and interesting story

This was the first book by Higley that I've ever read. I became interested in this one after hearing her talking about it on author Tricia Goyer's podcast on YouTube where she interviews fellow authors about their upcoming releases. Higley's description of a magical garden where the great authors, artists, and other creative minds were able to come together despite living in different eras intrigued me immediately. In fact, I think "intriguing" is a very good word for the story on the whole.

Higley's writing style grabbed me immediately and kept me engaged throughout. While I haven't read a lot of "magical realism" books, I enjoy stories set in modern day that manage to still have an element of the fantastical, and I definitely found that here. Kelsey almost seems like a Hallmark heroine at first with her struggling bookshop that was about to be taken by the local government through eminent domain. But just when I thought I knew how her story would go, she walked into the magical garden and met the likes of Agatha Christie and Charles Dickens.

I would definitely give the themes in this book 5 or more stars. It's very much a love letter to creative hearts everywhere. Whether you're a writer, painter, sculptor, builder, baker, singer, etc, this book wants you to know you're not alone in the struggle to figure out why our creative pursuits are worth doing in the first place. We often feel passionate about our art, whatever it may be, but when things go from fun and inspiring to difficult and even painful, why do we keep doing it? It is selfish to pursue art or is there a deeper purpose to it that can reach far beyond ourselves? These are the kinds of questions that this book asks, and ultimately it draws the same conclusions that I have over the years and I felt myself nodding along and smiling as Kelsey figured it out too during her fantastical journey through the Garden of Deep Time.

For the story on the whole, I do have one critique that certain elements of the ending (things that happened while Kelsey was in the real world setting, not the garden) had me tilting my head, unsure if this was a thing that could realistically happen in real life, from a legal perspective at least. I don't want to say what it was because holy moly there were several really big reveals in this book that were fun to discover, and I'd hate to ruin that experience for someone else with spoilers. I just wasn't sure how realistic this one twist in particular was, or, honestly, if it was even intended to be realistic, or if it was simply a matter of suspending belief so Kelsey could have her journey come full circle. If the latter is the case, that's fine, I just really didn't see that reveal coming!

Overall, though, I thought this was a very creative story that wasn't quite like anything I've ever read before. It serves as an excellent reminder of the power of art and creativity in all its many forms to not just be beautiful and fun, but to be something that we can give in service to others, to encourage, inspire, and even heal. And that's what makes it worth doing, no matter the struggles. I highly recommend this book to people who maybe need to be uplifted while also enjoying a good story with many fanciful twists and turns that ultimately has a very sweet and positive ending.
