AN INSTANT INDIE, USA TODAY, AND NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!

“The world knows that Carroll prevailed in her gazillion-dollar lawsuits against Trump for defamation and sexual abuse. But hearing her describe that courtroom battle in her own smoky, mirth-filled drawl is an experience too delicious for the printed page. Which is why you shouldn’t read Not My Type—you should listen to it.”—The Washington Post

"Delightful . . . We already know that E. Jean Carroll looked smashing when she went to court versus Donald J. Trump. But her irrepressible voice was, necessarily, repressed...Now she is saying pretty much everything."—The New York Times Book Review

"Buoyant."—The New York Times

A hilarious, hopeful, revelatory behind the scenes account of the trials that riveted the nation

You’ve heard about the tantrums, the seething, the storming out of court, yes. But what about E. Jean’s side of the story? What about the flight suits, the bottle of green Chartreuse, and the bob?

Not My Type puts you in a better seat than the jury box.

You will hear Alina Habba, Esq., “Trump’s most beautiful attorney,” asking E. Jean to “list” the people she has “slept with”—a list which turns out to be so marvelous, it is worth twice the price of this book. You will experience the fear and loathing of E. Jean’s “psychiatric evaluations,” and hear how she tries to cheer up Trump’s gloomy, $750-an-hour shrink by telling him about the strange white tablet Hunter S. Thompson gave her.

You will be in on the choosing of the “clothes for court,” and the creation of “the look”: a look that will help the jury connect the younger E. Jean who is attacked by Trump in Bergdorf’s with the older E. Jean who sits in the courtroom.

It’s all here: two dazzling trials, the full-tilt high stakes, the laugh-out-loud commentary, and the inspiring fact that a woman is never too old to get even.

Critic reviews

"Shockingly hilarious... a thriver from a bygone era when writers knew how to really live and propel their prose with rocket fuel... Carroll has written what may be the last great work of New Journalism... employs all her wit, erudition and insight."—Ron Charles, Book Club Newsletter, Washington Post

"Fascinating on so many levels...so, so funny...such keen and hilarious observations."―Katie Couric

"Uses quick asides, charming anecdotes, goofball humor and court transcripts to detail her fight against the most powerful man in America, it feels hopeful...She’s still so wholly E. Jean. Right there, on the page. Erratic. Funny. Full of life...A field guide for fighting fascism and winning, and not just winning but triumphing and remaining wholly, exuberantly, exasperatingly human."—Lyz Lenz, MSNBC

I want to like it because I hate Trump, and I'm still happy I bought it because I love this book to be number one just to make him mad, and I'm sorry for everything is you went through and I love what she's doing with her money. However, a lot of the book was hard for me to relate to because it felt more like reading a diary than reading a story. It was a lot of self repeating and self motivation, and talking about how much pieces of clothing cost. And I don't know if we were supposed to relate to someone who shops at those stores but here in Minnesota I can't relate to that. So every time she said how much a pair of shoes or a shirt cost and I'm like that's more than I would spend a whole outfit, or the repeated organic food descriptions, I did become a bit disenfranchised. It sounded more like something that someone who would hang out with Trump would write.... It was also very vague about the descriptions of the trump Part of the story. That's the part I think I would've enjoyed more. some of the descriptions were cute and clever, but weren't overly hilarious to me, and seemed heavy-handed. It sounded like you could tell the person was 81 writing it and she is so I have a feeling that this will speak to older women than me, women who are in their 60s and up. She also goes on and on about how much she loves her lawyer so I looked up her lawyer and there's all the stuff about her lawyer and employee practices and I'm surprise she didn't touch on that at all, so bias there too. Oh well, everyones story is bias.

The only thing better than reading this candid account of Carroll vs Trump is listening to her tell it. Pour yourself a drink and imagine yourself across the table from her in a booth at your favorite watering hole.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to E. Jean sharing her experiences. She inspires with her courage, strength, grit, humor, humility, and brilliance. I think she is fascinating, funny, likable, relatable, authentic, and she’s got the “right stuff.” What’s that song in Godspell called? Turn Back, Old Man.

E. Jean articulates some of what has bedeviled me as a rape survivor, and you don't have to have endured that common trauma to feel seen and heard by her. Her story as a scrappy professional lady, who refuses to be diminished due to her age and understands all the ways society views and treats women, makes this a universally felt experience. I loved her rawness, realness, poetic and often funny imagery, and all the wry observations. She is American women's knight in shining armor, all courage and feisty conviction, who left some exquisitely mortal wounds in the dragon who threatens to light our country on fire. God bless you, E. Jean!

LOVE IT - MY HERO

Didn’t know that much about E Jean before listening but I am now her lifelong devoted deep admirer. I doubt this book would be quite as entertaining without her emotive & beautifully inflected narration. My husband and I truly enjoyed it.

I loved the author’s sense of humor and point of view. Donald Trump is a pig!

It was like being in the room with her and going through the whole range of emotions.

Hearing E. Jean in her own voice.

Not My Type is more than a memoir; it is a manifesto against the stupidity we are all facing with this mendacious president. There are flashpoints across American history that remind me of how flawed our quest for democracy has become. This case and its outcome is a rare instance of the sweet and righteous American spirit shining through in age of fascism and sadism.

I love hearing E Jean Carroll's voice and learning more from her allusions to Kafka and Maupassant, to her comparison of today's every day people to characters in a renaissance painting, to the painstaking detail to fashion (which I normally don't care about).

We are living in very dark times. This book is a reminder that we are not this nation; we are so much more than American. We are human beings deserving of respect and consideration and protection. Also, Donald Trump is a predator and a felon. That people like that tells me we are in for an ugly, dirty war. I am on team Carroll.
