About this listen

This program is read by the author.

Who Could Ever Love You is an intimate, heartbreaking memoir of a father, a mother, and a family’s exile.

Mary Trump grew up in a family divided by its patriarch’s relentless drive for money and power. The daughter of Freddy Trump, the highly accomplished, dashing eldest son of wealthy real estate developer Fred Trump, and Linda Clapp, a flight attendant from a working-class family, Mary lived in the shadow of Freddy’s humiliation at the hands of his father.

Fred Trump embodied the ethos of the zero-sum game and among his five children, there could only be one winner. That was supposed to be Freddy, his namesake, but Fred found him wanting—too sensitive, too kind, too interested in pursuits beyond the realm of the real estate empire he was meant to inherit. In Donald, Fred found a kindred spirit, a “killer,” who would stop at nothing to get his own way.

Even after Freddy’s short-lived career as a professional pilot for TWA came to an end, he never stopped trying to gain his father’s approval. Finally, at the age of forty-two, he succumbed to Fred’s lethal contempt and died alone in an emergency room, with no family by his side.

In WHO COULD EVER LOVE YOU, Mary Trump brings us inside the twisted family whose patriarch ignored, froze out, and eventually destroyed his own. Freddy Trump’s decline into alcoholism and illness, along with Linda’s suffering after their divorce, left Mary dangerously vulnerable as a very young girl.

Inadequately and only conditionally loved, there were no adults in her life except for the father she loved, but lost before she could know him; and a mother abandoned by her ex-husband’s rich and powerful family who demanded her loyalty but left her with nothing.

With searching insight, poignant detail, and unsparing prose, Mary Trump reveals the cold, selfish cruelty that has come to define the Trump family thanks in large part to her uncle, whose malignant ambition has riven our nation and threatens the world.

Critic reviews

“By turns lyrical and stark, Mary Trump writes with honesty, anguish, and unflinching detail about growing up in a family that made a sport of destroying its own. Who Could Ever Love You lays bare the Trump dynastic traumas and demonstrates how those traumas now hold sway over all of us. Mary Trump has written a brilliant memoir.”—Molly Jong-Fast

“This memoir is the portrait of a spark—is it love, or God, or decency?—the spark inside the rare person that can grow in the hardest ground, the sandiest soil. I honestly don’t know how someone can withstand such a thoroughly poisonous stew of a family dynamic and come out the other end such an intelligent, caring and perspicacious human being. That Mary Trump exists is nothing short of a miracle.”—Aimee Mann, Grammy Award-winning musician

"Trump’s clear and concise prose shines...an astute and occasionally explosive plunge into an American dynasty’s heart of darkness."—Publishers Weekly, starred review

Who Couldn't Love You

I couldn't put this book down. Mary is a great writer and I'm so proud of her strength and courage to publish this book telling us what it was like for her to grow up as a Trump. Who could have ever thought that such a prominent family could be so cold, selfish and loveless. My heart aches for her, her brother and her Dad. Great insights into her mom too. The epilog of this book really sealed it for me. How disgraceful. She was too young to change her own circumstances at the time, and her parents were so broken. There are so many lessons to be learned here by anyone who has the courage to listen to this book. Please do this BEFORE the upcoming election. It could have a major impact on how you decide to vote for the leader of our free country. I'm speaking to those especially who call themselves a Christian. God Bless You Mary! You can teach the world about real love and compassion. I am praying for you. I think you will be blessed immensely.

Resilient and heartbreaking

Mary endured a loveless family, buoyed sometimes by her father’s nearly irrepressible spirit. Even that was extinguished too soon. Still, her intelligence, kindness, and spirit have seen her through very tough times. I thank her for the window into the soulless family that issued our worst president. May sanity and goodness prevail in November. Thank you, Mary

Authentic Mary Trump

Sometimes it seemed the book could be titled Wounded. Or Cinderella. Long live the JC, her love of reading and formal education. May she śpend more years out doors with Avery and with loving friends -- sailing. Visit the Trumps in Scotland. Compelling heart-breaking family abuse.

Extraordinary memoir

Mary Trump's childhood memories offer vivid insight into the very dysfunctional Trump family. Also offered is insight into a child who perseveres as best she can under extraordinary, painful circumstances. A woman to be admired for her honesty and lifelong efforts. An exceptional memoir.

So THATS why Donald is such a mean spirited person!

Didn’t realize trumps parents were so mean and sociopathic! Donald was never shown how to love others! He was taught selfishness from day one!

Theraputic, relatable

Mary had a rough road but has risen above the debacle of her upbringing to share her deeply personal story. While I expected to - and did - gain insight into the mess that is republican nomany for president, I did not expect this book to resonate at all, let alone so profoundly with me personally. I was in tears on several occasions as I found myself relating to some of her experiences. I'd never given voice to those experiences, but hearing someone do so in such an eloquent yet truthful manner lessened the solitude I'd felt. As she comes to terms with past hurts in her 50s, I feel a little less ashamed that it's taken me so very long to do the same. from the bottom of my heart, thank you Mary.

An honest look

Mary L. Trump walks us through her life growing up in the Trump family and explores the impact of multi-generational crazy. I feel for her, and hope that when our country turns the page on her uncle, she can turn the page on her past. If there's hope for Mary, there's hope for the rest of us, too.

Her honesty

I identified with her struggle of feeling unloved and unattended to in her youth and teenage years
