Publisher's summary

World War II has arrived, and U.S. Army intelligence wants Nero Wolfe urgently. But the arrogant, gourmandizing, sedentary sleuth refuses the call to duty. It takes his perambulatory, confidential assistant, Archie Goodwin, to titillate Wolfe's taste for crime with two malevolent morsels: a corpse that won't rest in peace and a sinister "accident" involving national security. So as Goodwin lays the bait on the wrong side of the law, Wolfe sets the traps to catch a pair of wily killers.

Critic reviews

"It's always a treat to read a Nero Wolfe mystery. The man has entered our folklore." (The New York Times)
"What's not to like about a Nero Wolfe mystery? The mysteries are short, cleverly plotted, well paced, and, if you're an audiobook listener, wonderfully read by Michael Prichard....Prichard has read nearly 20 books in Stout's series and has mastered Wolfe's deep, meditative voice and Archie's spry, chipper voice, as well as those of a host of other characters we recognize from one recording to the next." Wolfe at War

A real treat for this confirmed NW fan. The two novellas show Mr Wolfe breaking with his long standing routines and using his investigation talents to assist with the the war effort.

Nero ends the Case!

Any Nero Wolf book is a joy to read or listen to. The reader M Prichard, who has read a multitude of these books has the tone and personality of the characters down pat. Archy and Nero especially. This story had an ending that is a shocker. Never in any other has Nero's action seemed not to follow the law through to the end.

A good retelling of a great story by a great author

What more is there to say? A really great story. Fans will love it. Remember, however, it was written in a previous time with previous sensibilities.

Another Great Nero Wolfe Story

The first of the two stories has to be one of my favorite Nero Wolfe stories yet. The second was a bit different in structure, but still enjoyable.

Two Stories in One Book Both Entertaining

Another interesting look at the Nero Wolfe household in trying circumstances and how they changed their lifestyles to adapt, this time to the war against Germany in WWII.

Satisfactory!

Would you consider the audio edition of Not Quite Dead Enough to be better than the print version?

Micheal Pritchard IS Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin. Nobody does Wolfe better.

What other book might you compare Not Quite Dead Enough to and why?

The Black Mountain where we see Wolfe step out of his comfort zone and tackle problems in a new yet totally Wolfe way.

Have you listened to any of Michael Prichard’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

All of them. Performance is spot on.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

certainly!

Narrator is not good

This is not the Nero Wolf I remember. The story was hard to follow and the narrator was nasally and monotone. Read the book. Save your credits

War Time Nero!

Any additional comments?

As I see Nero Wolfe in my mind's eye, I never picture him jogging on the piers of NY, readying himself to go "kill some Germans". This story is quirky, to say the least. But it is also vintage Nero Wolfe and a great snapshot of wartime America in WWII.
