This classic tale begins on Christmas Eve, when young Marie Stahlbaum and her siblings open their Christmas presents. One toy, a Nutcracker who looks like a soldier, soon become Marie’s favourite gift. That night, the Nutcracker comes to life and battles the evil Mouse King.
Once Marie discovers how the Nutcracker came to be cursed, she has many decisions to make. Will she help the Nutcracker defeat the Mouse King? Will she help break his curse? And will she return to the magical kingdom, populated by dolls, to be with her beloved Nutcracker?
In this unabridged edition, E. T. A. Hoffmann’s timeless fantasy leaps from the chapter as the author originally intended. Discover his rich and enchanting world in this new English translation.

I have not read the retelling by Alexandre Dumas yet, so I can’t compare, but in researching the history of this tale, it is said that this original version was “dark” and that Dumas made it more “sugary and magical”. I did not find anything about this story dark, or scary, or creepy.
This was a solid 1800’s child’s fairytale. In my opinion, written rather simply and one dimensional as most were in that period. Many confusing plot twists, some holes and outlandish portions. Yet cherishable because of what it is.
♥️The original Nutcracker fairytale♥️
For that reason alone, I give 5 stars and highly recommend reading/listening to this production. If anything, just to fully understand a lifetime of Nutcracker pop culture. (And to be able to say that you have!) ♥️♥️
