About this listen

She rides a fireborn, a steed of fire and ash, trained for destruction.

Ceridwen tal Desmond dreams of ruling like her father over the nation of Soldonia, where warriors ride to battle on magical steeds—soaring on storm winds, vanishing in shadow, quaking the earth, and summoning the sea. After a tragic accident claims her twin brother, she is exiled and sworn to atonement by spending her life—or death—for her people.

But when invaders spill onto Soldonia’s shores and traitors seize upon the chaos to murder her father, Ceridwen claims the crown to keep the nation from splintering. Combatting overwhelming odds and looming civil war, she begins to wonder if the greatest threat to the kingdom may, in fact, be her.

With fire before her and ash in her wake, how can she hope to unite instead of destroy?

Flames rage and oceans rise in this explosive first installment of the Fireborn Epic as the exiled heir, a novice priest, and a reluctant rebel wage war against a hidden power that threatens to shake the world.

Vivid and exciting!

I loved the premise of all the types of magical horses and their various abilities. Creative worldbuilding with a sweeping, epic plot and enjoyable characters. I especially loved Ceridwen for her unrelenting drive and Rafi for all his sarcasm. The vivid battle scenes were great, too! And hearing the story read by the author was extra special--you can hear her passion for the book in this performance. Well done!

Just finished readthrough #5

Read it three times, listened to it twice. Fantasy can't get much better than this, with magical horses and trauma-ladden characters. There is a whole lot more failed plans in this book than most fantasy, which gives it an air of realism. The characters easily get you emotionally invested, and for those of us who know, the Biblical allusions are just stunning. I absolutely love Adam's narration, mostly the voices and the accents used. I just love this book, and I'm highly anticipating the sequal (which comes out rather close to my birthday, coincidentally, so the purchase is justified lol).

Amazing / Captivating

This realm is built methodically and imaginatively. The characters are crisp, heroic and relatable. This author reading her own story lends an even better air to it. I can’t wait to continue this story in book two.

last Air Bender meets Dune!

Listened to it 4 times last month. it's a cross between Avatar the Last Air Bender and Dune. Definitely not just my little pony. I live in fearful anticipation that her next book will break my heart. Then I might have to listen to it 5 times in a row.

Detailed World Building

Fantastic and thorough world building! Three POVs is something I’ve not seen before so it was interesting to see. Looking forward to the sequel!
