About this listen

In his travels through Israel and Gaza, #1 International Bestselling author Douglas Murray has seen the best and the worst humanity has to offer, and he has no trouble choosing a side.

Murray is not Jewish and before October 7, he had never lived in Israel. However, he objects to being lied to, and Israel has been on the receiving end of the biggest, deepest, longest lies in history.

Israel's commitment to fundamental Western values—capitalism, individual rights, democracy, and reason—has made it a beacon of progress in a region dominated by authoritarianism and extremism. Israel’s principles vividly contrast with the ideology of Hamas, which openly proclaims its love of death over life. With incisive moral clarity, On Democracies and Death Cults exposes how the campus left and international establishment confuse this conflict by:

  • Calling on Israel for restraint and proportionality, while Hamas commits genocide.
  • Slandering Israelis as white colonialists, while only a third of Israelis are Jews of European ancestry.
  • Framing the conflict as oppressor vs. oppressed, when it is really between a thriving multi-ethnic democracy and a death cult bent on its annihilation.

Drawing from intensive on-the-ground reporting in Israel, Gaza, and Lebanon, Douglas Murray places the latest violence in its proper historical context. He takes listeners on a harrowing journey through the aftermath of the October 7 massacre, piecing together the exclusive accounts from victims, survivors, and even the terrorists responsible for the atrocities. If left unchecked, misplaced sympathy could embolden forces that seek to undermine not only Israel, but all of Western civilization.

Immensely important, first hand account of the war that represents the most important struggle of our time.

In this beautifully written and perfectly narrated book, Douglas Murray incapsulates and conveys the genuine feelings of the soldiers, and civilians, fighting the war against Hamas militants, and delegitimization and evil, respectively.

As a combat soldier in the IDF myself, who fought in Gaza for hundreds of days, I can say with confidence that Douglas has captured the essence of being an IDF soldier, and articulates it better than most of us can imagine our own experiences.

I listen to the book as soon as it was available, and recommend it with full heart.

Douglas Murray is the goat

One of the only sane voices left in western media. He explains that Not all societies and ideas are created equal and at our own peril we ignore that fact

Rivetting

Like all of Murray's books, this book is well-written, witty, lurid, and shocking. But this book seems, if possible, even more timely and concerning than his previous works. This is a book about war, and as such it is not a fun book. It is heart-breaking and horrifying. But it is also deeply moving and optimistic. And these extreme juxtapositions, that Murray lays out so well, make this the most engaging book I have read some time. It is worth every minute of your time.

A Reason for Optimism

Brilliant reporting and analysis. But even more important, compelling defense of truth and decency and freedom.

Excellent on what and how but less on why

A great book—as one would expect from Douglas Murray. It's very well written, clearly structured, and powerfully narrated. The author lays out a vivid and precise account of what happened, where, when, and how, with strong historical and political context. In that sense, it serves as an excellent resource for both study and analysis.

However, the analytical depth feels somewhat limited. Perhaps this is due to the complexity and long, painful history of antisemitism—or perhaps because the hatred of Jews is so deeply ingrained, almost as if inherited from birth, with the first gulp of mother's milk. Given Murray’s intelligence, knowledge, and eloquence, I was left hoping he would allow himself to dig deeper and explore the roots of this hatred further.

While he rightly identifies evil as a force in the world and points to heroism as the answer, this conclusion feels a bit too concise for a subject of such depth and gravity. I wish he had taken the analysis one or two steps further.

A Life-Affirming Voice of Reason in a World Gone Mad

Hands down, this is the best book on the subject of 10/7 and global antisemitism. If I could give the author a warm heartfelt embrace and a big gay kiss, I would! Douglas Murray is truly one of greatest allies of the Jewish people, one of the most brilliant minds of his generation, and one of the most optimistic defenders of Western civilization. L'Chaim! Seemingly robust, honest journalism

If you’re looking for a seemingly honest, comprehensive and objective pov on the cultural and political climate in Israel and Palestine, you’ll find a version of that here. That, and a clearer lens to look at the west through. Courageous and captivating work. Thank you Douglas.

Remarkable and so needed. Now, this needs to be read by leaders and students and politicians, academia, and on and on.
