About this listen

Arthur MacDonald, 85, is having an end-of-life crisis. His beloved, dying wife of over 60 years no longer knows who he is. His older brother still has all his hair and a wife almost half his age. The man his middle-aged daughter is dating has a ponytail.

His teenaged grandson wants to cook desserts for a living. And his daughter wants him to move into Silvermine retirement home. Then Arthur meets the gorgeous, radical, 80-something-year-old Robbie and learns that nobody is ever too old to fall in love all over again.

Sensitive and human look at getting older…..

I loved this poignant and humorous look at the foibles and dangers of getting older in an insensitive world. Rich and engaging characters - I felt as if I knew them. Respectful dip into the mortality of aging, and the possibilities of choices were forced to make. Warm and generous writing.

Loved this book.

Warm, kind, nurturing. And an all out pleasure to read. The characters show so much depth and love and make you wish you could share time with them.

New Insight

I appreciated this story very much for bringing insight to the practice of self uthenasia. My father died a terrible death due to cancer. He chose to starve himself instead of the alternative. I wish the laws had been different at that time, so that it wouldn't have been so hard on him. This was a beautiful story. Thank you.

Surprisingly moving

A rare writer who treats aging, dementia, and end-of-life issues with sensitivity and compassion as well as humor and humanity. The narrator was wonderful.

Enjoyable, Unusual and Thought Provoking

I found it thoroughly refreshing to encounter characters who are elderly but vibrant as well.
This book was an unusual treat, therefore. The characters were well developed and varied. Dealing with true old age is rare in modern novels in my experience.

Thoughtful

Glad that audible escape has a thoughtful book, not just the typical romance. Although some might write it off as a depressing book, there were many points that had me chuckling. Maybe you have to be “of a certain age” to appreciate this book.

Blown Away

I absolutely loved the story as well as the performance. It really made me more compassionate towards people whose stories I don't know. The author writes with a simple and beautiful empathy. I couldn't recommend this more!

Well- written, touching, insightful

To me, the marks of a good book are: 1. to inspire me reconsider my own thoughts, and 2. to keep coming back to my mind to live on after the book is finished. This book achieved both. The writing was excellent, the characters well- developed and relatable. Well worth reading!
