About this listen

Love and survival in the shadow of Waterloo....

Wearied by his years as a British intelligence officer, Simon Duval resigns his commission after Napoleon’s abdication. Hoping to find new meaning in his life, he returns to England, where he discovers his cousin’s widow, Suzanne Duval, the Comtesse de Chambron. Working as a seamstress, living in reduced circumstances, Suzanne has had a life as complicated as Simon’s. While both believe they are beyond love, their sympathetic bond leads him to propose a marriage of companionship, and Suzanne accepts.

She didn't want or expect a true marriage, but as Suzanne joins Simon in a search for his long missing foster brother, warmth and caring begin to heal both their scars - and a powerful passion sparks between them. Then news from France threatens to disrupt their happiness. Napoleon has escaped from Elba and Wellington personally asks Simon to help prevent another devastating war. Only this time, Simon does not go into danger alone. He and Suzanne will face deadly peril together, and pray that love will carry them through....

What a Great Journey

Very satisfying time spent with these characters. And Beverly Crick does an admirable job going from male to female, French to English using different accents within both languages. The characters are intelligent and very likable. Never did I cringe at the plot progression or character actions. Would that more romance genre stories could be so satisfying.

Fast-paced , can’t stop listening till the end!

It is amazing how this author creates a very unusual love story, and then proceeds to interweave her fictional characters into and through the actual military events taking place in the final great meeting between Bonaparte and Wellington’s armies. Many of the details of the leaders and the location and dates of battles are real. Very careful research is the final touch that makes MaryJo Putney the excellent historical fiction writer she is. I have now read this book numerous times, and it seems more enthralling each time I listen. If I could give the story 6 stars I would!

Pretty darn good

There’s a little bit intrigue in this book. Not much but a little bit of steam. It’s a nice romance between two mature thinking adults. Some parts may be triggering to folks.

Updated review...loved the book

I'm so glad I persisted and listened multiple times to this book. This time I listened with an open mind and found that I loved it. The book is a perfect example of MJP's great talents....telling a good story and developing strong rich characters. Beverly A Crick's talents of differentiating between male and female voices and her great variety of foreign voices.

Good historical novel

The author was amazing to weave such a story of intrigue, healing, and love. I don’t know history well enough to vouch for its historical accuracy but the story was so possible that often I’d find myself holding my breath as the story unfolded. The incredible patience of her husband was a true story of love. Few stories go into the aftermath of sexual abuse and this author showed wisdom in how healing Can occur with patience and love. I was very impressed.
And … each story I have read of hers has a cat… this story is not an exception- haha

Once a Spy

A sweeping romance where a broken woman is found by a broken man. The story is amazing and Beverley A. Crick adds so much to the story. she is gifted with her French accents as well as English. When surrounded by war and the turbulence between England and France two lost souls find each other and begin to heal. 😍
