Love must find a way...

A sheltered life in the countryside has left Diana Lindsay restless to see the wider world, for both herself and the son she is raising alone. She cannot marry, but perhaps as a courtesan she will find love and protection despite her painful past. Gathering her courage, she moves to London - and finds herself the city's most desired woman, as admired for her charm as for her beauty. But it is one man who captivates her - handsome, haunted, and harboring a secret as deep as her own...

Bound by the sins of his youth, Gervase Brandelin, the Viscount St. Aubyn, has spent his adulthood seeking redemption through service to England. Now a spymaster, he can allow nothing to distract him from his duty. But when he meets Diana, his burdens seem to lift. Though she can never truly be his alone, their genuine love fills him with hope, until a treacherous deceit - and a deadly enemy - threatens to tear them apart forever...

Really held my interest

Mary Jo Pitney is a great story teller and the narration was good although the male voices were just a bit effeminate for my taste.

This story is heavy, heartbreaking and upsetting at times.. and utterly beautiful overall. Well done!

Fantastic performance

I loved the story with its twists and turns, made all the more intriguing by the superb narration by Christine Rendel. Listen to this story, and you’ll find yourself searching for other titles she narrates.

Beautiful story

I think I had tears in my eyes through half of this book, the story was so heartfelt. I did not expect half the twists. The main characters pull you in and you can’t help but feel for them both, in different ways, and hope each will be redeemed. Parts were truly shocking but the resolution makes you, as well as the characters, feel so much better. We’ll worth the listen.

A hauntingly beautiful tale of suffering and redemption.

I’m loved that this audio book was much longer than most. The story is multi/layered and was deeply felt.

An extraordinary story!

This was one of those “most” stories for me. The most beautiful, most heart rending, most powerful, most inspiring etc, ect. Just downright the most awesome book I’ve had the privilege to listen to in a very long time. I don’t think I need to say more, other than do not miss this one! The twists and turns in this book will keep your attention till the end. The narration by Christine Rendel was excellent and brought life to the awesome characters. Very highly recommended.

Caution: Not lighthearted. But so worth your credit.

This excellent title deals with topics that can be difficult for some listeners- abuse, deep emotional pain- but it also offers an examination of those ordeals and how one couple may stumble their way through such painful things. Yes, it is a great HR, with the steamy scenes I expected...but it also deals with painful topics in a straightforward way that some listeners will find difficult. But, there is something to be said for living someone else’s pain vicariously- and can be cathartic for some. The story sucks you in, with characters that could just as easily be from your own life- quite imperfect and complex, easy to love and hate at the same time.
This book is like strong medicine- so if you have triggers be mindful. I’m glad I stuck with it- I still find myself ruminating over one scene or another though I finished it days ago.
