The war is over, but the fight for freedom has only just begun.

Berlin. August 1961. The Cold War. When the Berlin Wall brutally divides East from West, Sabine is separated from her beloved brother, Dieter. informative though it is fiction ...

This important story is beautifully written. It brings a period of history alive of Post World War 2, the cold war in Germany. The East was under Communist regime that suppressed the citizens who lived in fear, oppression, and suffered, as during actual physical warfare. Isolation alone, and the many extremes of inhumane regulation interfered in all aspects of daily life.
Berlin was split and those in the EAST suffered miserably.
The characters are well developed and unforgettable. I researched to find out if there was role of the allies in assisting Germany to rid communism. I learned much that was passed by in my education as a baby boomer. I do recommend this as a good read.
