About this listen

A Wall Street Journal bestselling series.

To stop a terrorist threat, Gibson Vaughn must trust a man who can’t be trusted.

Former Marine, brilliant hacker, and wanted fugitive Gibson Vaughn is off the grid in the Caymans. Until the ice-cold assassin Tinsley draws him out of the shadows. Complying with the man who murdered his father and left Gibson for dead? In the war against terror, never say never.

Especially when half a million lives are at stake.

Tinsley's in possession of a heavily encrypted thumb drive. But the details of the plot - the motive, the targets, and the day of execution - are a mystery. The one certainty is that a tenuous truce must be made. After joining forces with Tinsley, Gibson and his team have their mission: access the drive and abort a massacre in the making.

How far can Gibson really trust Tinsley? Time will tell. Right now they’re both running out of it as they race across Europe to find an elusive cyber-psycho behind the mother of all malware.

Whoever said to keep your friends close but your enemies closer never meant it like this.

This book appears to be the final installment in the Gibson Vaughn series, although the author could revive it. I feel like FitzSimmons wasn’t quite sure where he wanted to go with these protagonists, and he seemed to be taking the series in a particular direction in book 2, then back to three more adventures with the original gang, but he’s now run out of creative ideas on where these characters can go. And so this book, while very enjoyable, does have a certain lost feeling to it. In any case, in this book, Vaughn and the gang are somewhat forcibly drawn into a feud between a hired assassin and the person who hired him, which then develops into a race against a catastrophic computer hack. Some very nasty individuals are involved. I have always enjoyed the characters and the author’s writing style. The plot is fast paced, and the protagonists are real people who make a lot of mistakes but think quickly on their feet. I really enjoyed this series and I’d love to see it revived sometime.

The narration helps make the book excellent. We love the book and the series. It always feels like we're leaving friends behind when it's done.

Liked it a lot. My only issue is that there seemed to be some audio glitches toward the end. Original twist on the usual thriller. Lines between good and bad blur - in a good way.

Quickly paced, good plot

This is one of my favorites in this series. I hope there are more books, but based on the way it ended I doubt there will be.

See what I did there, Matthew FitzSimmons? Wrote my headline in a tense that assumes more installment(s) to come? :) Hopefully not wishful thinking! I do a lot of walking during these Covid times and listen to books - I have plowed through the Gibson Vaughn series and have enjoyed it immensely. I especially like the witty, sarcastic humor of the characters and often laugh out loud at the dialogue (fun when I'm walking by myself and other people are around).

James Patrick Cronin is fantastic at bringing the characters to life - accents and delivery are awesome.

Enjoying this series!!

I’ve read all the books in this and all have been excellent!! I’m hoping FitzSimmons will continue this group for a long time.

Yet another excellent addition to this awesomely captivating series. This installment really ties the series together while still leaving you wonder what could possibly come next...or if this is the conclusion? Time will tell!

Very Well Done

I like this series because the hacking is very authentic and not "deus ex machina." The characters are well developed and not perfect in morals or ability.

It's not quite as clever and tightly wrapped as the previous entries, but if you enjoyed the previous books, then I definitely recommend it.

Consistent quality.
