About this listen

Among the towering firs and windswept beaches of a Pacific Northwest island, a woman's long-ago first love unexpectedly returns, teaching her the damaging power of secrets and the liberating lessons of love.

Widow Phoebe Allen has single-handedly raised a wonderful daughter and established a successful business supplying nets to fishermen, and now enjoys the amorous attentions of a longtime friend. But when she learns that her old boyfriend, Whitney Traynor, has purchased a house nearby, she must confront long-suppressed feelings for her charismatic first love, now a high-profile indie film director.

For years, Phoebe has concealed truths from her daughter and may now be forced to divulge them. As the past rushes forth like an inevitable tide, Phoebe discovers the life-transforming benefits of opening one's heart.

Critic reviews

"Coburn's beautifully realized novel perceptively assesses what women do in love. A richly conceived portrait of memory and identity." (Kirkus Reviews)
"[Coburn's] depictions of the Pacific Northwest, with its windswept beaches and cedar-scented air, are evocative and rich." (Booklist)

I'm not saying this isn't a good book. It's just not the book the publisher described in the promo ad. I felt this book was more about soul-sucking, never-ending obsessive attraction than a confrontation with the mistakes of the past. Although I have watched friends destroy their lives chasing after hopeless, obsessive relationships, I've never really understood why they couldn't just walk away. This might be very helpful reading for some, but I would never have made this purchase if I had known what the real story line was about.

I waited like what seemed a long time for the story to begin. Once I got into the story, I found the main character a little irritating because she seemed to have a huge amount of talent to do many different things and she made many bad choices. But somehow, she changed my mind and by the end of the story I was cheering for her. So if you ever have made bad cnoices,(who hasn't?) I learned all is not lost and it is never too late to fix your mistakes!

"Owl Island" is like a stone - once cracked open, it reveals it's hidden treasure of beauty. Phoebe thinks she knows what love is, but comes to realize love has many facets. The intrigue and mystery of her first love affects how she percieves herself and decisions she makes well into adulthood. From an unlikely source, Phoebe is forced to deal with her feelings once and for all. I couldn't stop listening. Excellent story.
