The stories in Fresh Complaint explore equally rich—and intriguing—territory. Ranging from the bitingly reproductive antics of “Baster” to the dreamy, moving account of a young traveler’s search for enlightenment in “Air Mail” (selected by Annie Proulx for Best American Short Stories), this collection presents characters in the midst of personal and national emergencies. We meet a failed poet who, envious of other people’s wealth during the real-estate bubble, becomes an embezzler; a clavichordist whose dreams of art founder under the obligations of marriage and fatherhood.

People are drawn to libraries for all kinds of reasons. Most come for the books themselves, of course; some come to borrow companionship. For head librarian Kit, the public library in Riverton, New Hampshire, offers what she craves most: peace. Here, no one expects Kit to talk about the calamitous events that catapulted her out of what she thought was a settled, suburban life. She can simply submerge herself in her beloved books and try to forget her problems. But that changes when 15-year-old, home-schooled Sunny gets arrested for shoplifting a dictionary.

Story
In her best-selling memoir North of Normal, Cea wrote with grace about her unconventional childhood - her early years living in a tipi in Alberta with her pot-smoking, free-loving counterculture family. But her struggles do not end when she leaves her family at the age of 13 to become a model. Honest and daring, Nearly Normal reveals the many ways that Cea's unconventional childhood continues to reverberate through the years.

Story
Charles Wang is mad at America. A brash, lovable immigrant businessman who built a cosmetics empire and made a fortune, he's just been ruined by the financial crisis. Now all Charles wants is to get his kids safely stowed away so that he can go to China and attempt to reclaim his family's ancestral lands - and his pride. Outrageously funny and full of charm, The Wangs vs. the World is an entirely fresh look at what it means to belong in America - and how going from glorious riches to (still name-brand) rags brings one family together in a way money never could.

Story
In the spring of 1978, a young Haruki Murakami sat down at his kitchen table and began to write. The result: two remarkable short novels—Hear the Wind Sing and Pinball, 1973—that launched the career of one of the most acclaimed authors of our time. These powerful, at times surreal, works about two young men coming of age—the unnamed narrator and his friend the Rat—are stories of loneliness, obsession, and eroticism. They bear all the hallmarks of Murakami’s later books, and form the first two-thirds, with A Wild Sheep Chase, of the trilogy of the Rat.

pleasant listen
I waited like what seemed a long time for the story to begin. Once I got into the story, I found the main character a little irritating because she seemed to have a huge amount of talent to do many different things and she made many bad choices. But somehow, she changed my mind and by the end of the story I was cheering for her. So if you ever have made bad cnoices,(who hasn't?) I learned all is not lost and it is never too late to fix your mistakes!

false advertising
I'm not saying this isn't a good book. It's just not the book the publisher described in the promo ad. I felt this book was more about soul-sucking, never-ending obsessive attraction than a confrontation with the mistakes of the past. Although I have watched friends destroy their lives chasing after hopeless, obsessive relationships, I've never really understood why they couldn't just walk away. This might be very helpful reading for some, but I would never have made this purchase if I had known what the real story line was about.

Loved It!
"Owl Island" is like a stone - once cracked open, it reveals it's hidden treasure of beauty. Phoebe thinks she knows what love is, but comes to realize love has many facets. The intrigue and mystery of her first love affects how she percieves herself and decisions she makes well into adulthood. From an unlikely source, Phoebe is forced to deal with her feelings once and for all. I couldn't stop listening. Excellent story.
