Publisher's summary

Piper is a lich-doctor, a physician who works among the dead, determining causes of death for the city guard's investigations. It's a peaceful, if solitary profession . . . until the day when he's called to the river to examine the latest in a series of mysterious bodies, mangled by some unknown force.

Galen is a paladin of a dead god, lost to holiness and no longer entirely sane. He has long since given up on any hope of love. But when the two men and a brave gnole constable are drawn into the maze of the mysterious killer, it's Galen's job to protect Piper from the traps that await them.

He's just not sure if he can protect Piper from the most dangerous threat of all . . .

Cute story/similar plotline

I really enjoy everything I’ve read by T. Kingfisher (which is most of what is currently available on Audible)! This story is sweet and it ties up a few loose ends from the first 2 books. This book follows 2 characters from the prior books, Galen (one of the St. Of Steel’s paladins) and Piper (one of the local mortuary doctors, or “lich Dr.”). They end up on a wild chase to stop a murderer. Following the clues with a friend, Earstripe the knoll, who had worked for the city guard.
I will say that after having read the first two books, you can see many of the same patterns emerging. Lots of the same tropes used… like eyes “locking on to [their] lips”. Or a paladin feeling guilty (and in this case, usually feeling broken, useless, and unworthy) etc. However, the plot was varied, the characters absolutely great.., basically, even though I occasionally noticed the romance novel tropes, they didn’t detract from enjoying the story. Worth reading, especially if you enjoyed the first two books, and are interested in finding out what happened to these two fantastic guys from previous books.

Praying the series could continue

I’ve listened to all three books in 1 week and I can’t get enough! Amazing adventure and Suspense; wish the book was longer like all the others but fully enjoyed. Highly recommend this series to anyone who love romance, adventure, fantasy, and warriors with amazing character then this series is for you! I pray that more books will be published in the near future.

Good story!

First, the narrator is finally showing more emotions in this one. And changing voices better. Whew!

Second, the tension between the two romantic leads was much less neurotic. Thank the gods (as the characters say)! It felt much more believable and I didn’t want to slap them for being so dense, like the first two books. I thought it was a sweet love story!

I also liked getting to know the gnome culture better. Give me a book just about them!

I didn’t enjoy the part where they were trapped in the deadly maze. I felt like it dragged on too long, but I’m kind of sensitive to that kind of jeopardy, so maybe I am just over sensitive.

But on the whole, this was another good book by the author, and I can definitely recommend the whole series.

Best one yet

I loved all of the Paladin’s books and this one was the best so far. They just kept getting better and better. Which is saying a lot because I adored the first two. I wish T Kingfisher had a dozen more books in this series.

lovely

this was my favorite of the paladin books so far. Piper is a wonderful character and the romance felt the most real and alive.

the last line will echo in my head until the next book comes loit

God help me, T Kingfisher owns me, mind, body, and soul. I've loved every book I've read by her, especially those in The Temple of the White Rat series, but this one takes the cake. I was already pretty sure it was going to be a five star read, but that final line, WHEW BOY. I listened to this on audio in my car alone, and upon hearing Piper's utterance of the final line of the book I SCREAMED. Out loud. More than once, for multiple minutes. I stopped screaming only to start hollering again moments later. The ending of this book shook me to my core. A fellow reader in my book club said that Paladin's Grace (the first in the Saint of Steel series, of which this is the third) had the best opening line, and this one had the best final line. Nothing truer has ever been said.

I don't even know how to talk about how amazing the rest of this book was. I knew I was going to like Galen, but I still wasn't expecting to love him this much. And Piper too!!! They were the best match and the cutest and the snarkiest and all around my favorite couple in the series. Only Kingfisher could write a series and have me love each couple more than the last. Piper and Galen have my heart.

I cannot believe I waited as long as I did to read these books. I don't know if I will ever be able to stop talking about them. I want and need everyone to read them so I can discuss them in perpetuity forever.
