About this listen

Paladin, traitor, outcast, mercenary... Dain Gladstone has been all of these. From childhood he’s been groomed for battle and trained in the Light. When war came he was branded a traitor and exiled for a treasonous act of mercy. To make his way in the world, Dain has sold his skills to the highest bidder. But now he’s grown tired of war, tired of fighting for causes not his own, and he’s got a plan. Galena... Rumors fly of a great fortune there, one buried beneath the snow-covered mountains, one vast enough to purchase an entire kingdom. Dain isn’t the only one seeking Galena’s riches. Men and elves and orcs all have plans of their own. Fortune has a way of twisting fate and turning the finest of plans on their heads.

A bit on the young adult side, but descent.

This book is fast paced and entertaining enough to pass the time. It's like World of Warcraft in the Wild West. I would definitely recommend it to fans of the game. It's easy to follow and the narration is really well done. Overall, a fun listen but nothing new here.

Good but fast

What three words best describe Patrick Cronin’s voice?

Narrator did good but left room for improvement. If there is a sequel keep with Cronins. Annoying when characters in a series become familiar with tone of voice and distinct inflections then narrator changes throwing you off and becomes a big let down. Unless you going to get rid of a bad choice for Michael Kramer or James Foster.

Any additional comments?

Story line good but ending was quick left you wanting more

Nothing Special

This is a fairly standard fantasy story about a down-on-his-luck paladin getting drawn into a conflict and trying to save a kingdom. The story is a little predictable and the writing is not outstanding. The bad elves are bad (rapists, torturers), the good elves are good (tree huggers.) It seemed like it had some potential but fell into well worn paths in the the fantasy genre, without wowing me in any way. I cannot recommend this book.

It's was a fun book but not very much depth

The story is pretty cliche and predictable. The characters one dimensional. It was a fun read but I listened at 3x speed to finish. The world was fresh and interesting but the characters lacked the depth of some of the other books I've read such as the black company series, the iron Druid series, mistborn series...
Also don't forget books by joe Abercrombie

Try the rook. It's awesome!

a good start.

looking forward to the next in the series. a note about the narration; it starts off in the first chapter as too gaudy but very quickly settles into its own. With this being the authors first book he did a fantasic job. My only criticism is that he could have been a bit more descriptive at times to bring more life into some scenes.
Overall however, a very pleasant read.
