The chip was supposed to suppress anger and violence. The world would be at peace. For 48 years that was true. And then one day it wasn't....

Gemi finds herself tumbling into chaos when the world suddenly succumbs to the madness of repressed emotions, only to be rescued by a group of military personnel. With no knowledge of what is causing the malfunction, it becomes a race against time and the population to make it back to the military base in one piece.

Paroxysm Effect is a fast-paced, heart-stopping journey that will leave you wondering who is safe to trust when the world is going crazy.

This engaging story takes place in the not too distant future, where implanted brain chips modify undesirable behavior. I don’t want to share spoilers like some other reviewers. Suffice it to say: It’s hard to tell the difference between the heroes and the villains. The narrator does a great job!

This book was the adventure of a young woman though several weeks of her life. It began with a normal day of waking up to go to work. The world in which she existed was one where people had been fitted with chips that allowed the control of anger and anxiety. When these chips started to malfunction she found herself in a world of violence and uncertainty. She is rescued by a group of soldiers who provide both support and hatred toward her and she is forced to cope with these feelings as the group travels toward their home base.

When it turns out that her life is really the result of false memories implanted during a test involving multiple lives she and the group find their minds struggling to cope with reality. When they begin to remember the full story behind their situation the mystery becomes even more involved.

The main character is so docile that she is somewhat hard to believe.

The narrator is exceptional though and makes these characters seem real. Her range of voices is outstanding and the emotion she gives to each is great.

This book was provided free of charge with the expectation of an honest review.

What did you love best about Paroxysm Effect?

The way the story lines did not reveal that it was all an imagined world.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Gemmi

What about Rebecca Roberts’s performance did you like?

She did an outstanding job of character portrayal. Very understandable with full range of emotions and vocal ranges for male and female.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me upset that some of the characters were shown as immature and unable to function in what was obviously a hostile environment.

Any additional comments?

This book was provided free of charge in exchange for a review. While this was deemed a medical thriller it was also obviously young adult. The characters were very immature, and and erratic .
