The narration as usual is perfection. The plot of this novel is endless, somewhat meandering, and dry. Nobody is very, and I guess this is the only un-engaging boom Agatha Christie ever wrote. For me the best part about the story is how exactly it echoes the politics of today in a horrifying history lesson. From a historical perspective this books is fascinating. But the plot itself Zzzzzzzzz

this is the only Agatha Christie book I ever read that I found boring

this was written in agatha's later years and it seems much weaker than her previous works. ah well - nevertheless - she remains the queen of mystery all the same! we are still huge fans. :-)

surprisingly weak for an agatha christie

This book is not the usual mystery Christie excels at writing. The plot centers more or less on how ideas or political/philosophical ideologies have always been part of mankind's history across all cultures . Nonetheless, it is quite clever and engaging to read.

Divergent

Plot tangled and complicated to the point that it became boring. The worst of Christie's that I've read so far. Waste of money and time.

Confusing and complicated

I like the middle chapters the best. Not to mention the last part as well.

I really like the fact that Christie’s is so unusual. It’s the best part about her books.

Really not your typical AC mystery. Her world views and trying to figure out what is happening in the world are what's going on here. She really has some interesting perspectives...at least I think so, as someone who has been through Covid, pre and present Trump politics, terrible goings on life in general in the USA I think she just needed an outlet to try to come to terms with how life had changed since WW2. 🤔 Well it made me think and feel very sad.

Agatha was a very Intelligent woman who wrote fun mysteries. She also wanted to relate to the world around her in those novels...as the world and it's values unwound before her it became impossible...I would have liked to know her. She brought me such joy and entertainment since I discovered her in the 70s especially her Poirot and then the BBC shows...well I indebted to her and miss her but this is definitely not her best work as some have said. Then others loved it. So decide for yourself, it most certainly makes you think, especially if you pay attention to history. Thanks Agatha I feel like I know you better.

Such split reviews AND I do agree with both sides!

Not Christie’s worst (beware the nearly unreadable Postern of Fate) and not without interest. I actually enjoyed her fleshing out of a worldwide conspiracy that felt shockingly in step with today’s political fears. But there was barely any real plot at all, far less characterization than you’d expect from her, and then it ended rather abruptly with a ludicrous cop out. Even she basically wrote it as “Welp, hope this crazy thing works!” Skip it unless you’re a big Christie fan or interested in analyzing political conspiracy theories over time.

Meh

I’m not sure I’d recommend this book for everyone. It’s a very different Agatha Christie book (#80) that is more like JV nonviolent James Bond tale. BUT it’s a fun read that features Hugh Fraser’s brilliant narration. He is the best.

Not for everyone but

Not one of Christie's best but some relevance to our troubled world today. An unusually scattered plot for such an accomplished author. Narration was spot on as always from Hugh Fraser.

Not one of Christie's best but some relevance.
