About this listen

Sophie Katz has just offered a man $12,000 for his services. Is she desperate or just meshugeneh?

Considering the kind of disasters that usually befall the half-black, half-Jewish mystery writer, probably both. Because the last time Sophie saw sexy P.I. Anatoly Darinsky, he practically danced a jig when she waved goodbye; a normal reaction for a man who'd nearly bought the farm trying to protect her from her own foolishness. What are the chances he'd agree to take incriminating pictures of her sister's philandering husband? Or that he'd let her tag along, you know, for research?

But when her brother-in-law turns up dead and her sister becomes the prime suspect, Sophie's priority is finding the real killer. With or without Anatoly's help. Her brother-in-law's secret life yields plenty of suspects, but the San Francisco police aren't taking any of them seriously. So Sophie does what comes naturally to her: she stirs up trouble (to lure the killer out, of course).

But if her crazy plan works, will Anatoly be there to protect her this time?

Critic reviews

"Following hard on the red spike heels of 2005's Sex, Murder, and a Double Latte, Davis' second whodunit delivers on the promise of the first....Davis chooses style over substance, skillfully keeping the snappy dialogue funny all the way to the unsurprising surprise ending." (Publishers Weekly)

Good Narration! Vapid Storyline?

I enjoyed Gabra Zackman's narration. I purchased this book based on Ms. Zackman's skill alone during Audible's recent "first in a series" sale. (I think it was actually the 2nd book in this series so I'm a little miffed about that one.) I adored Gabra's work with Maria V. Snyder's Study Series.

I love Jane Austen. I love the urban fantasy genre. I like a good mystery. I really have a broad range of literary likes. I didn't find many redeeming qualities in this story. If you want a really light read with some humor and a VERY predicable storyline, download it. Keep in mind that even mild mannered listeners will want to slap Sophie's sister Leah before the book is done. If you want humor, solid character development and interesting plot twists that keep you guessing and interested, check out Kim Harrison, Maria V. Snyder, Charlaine Harris, Sarah Addison Allen or Carrie Vaughn. I don't think I'll download another in this series.

Couldn't stop smiling!

I really enjoyed this book. The main character is so real and her friends are very loyal and together they are all just so funny. There were parts were I found myself laughing out loud in the car and was still smiling 5-10 mins later. I enjoyed the first book, this one made me laugh even more and I can't wait to listen to books 3 and 4. Highly recommmend!

it's ok..

It drags at times and could use a little more suspense, but over all it's a cool listen.

Turning out to be another favorite series!

Sophie Katz is a fun, kwirky heroine. I really got a kick out her relationship with her sister in this one! And the P.I. Anatoli, well, he is HOT. Love the chemistry.

Okay - recording issues.

Lots of recording issues giving the book title intro at the start of very new chapter in the middle chapters. Stating that the first book is the next book in the series at the end.
Otherwise, I enjoyed that it wasn’t just an excuse for soft porn. I also enjoyed that it was free in the romance package. I like the group of misfit characters the author is developing. I always enjoy Gabra Zackman, although I found the voice she decided on for Anatoly disappointing.
I will continue the series while I wait for more credits.

loved this story!

I really enjoyed learning more about Sophie and her family. There are arts in this book I will always remember and can kind of relate to. I will be listening to more of these when I get a chance.

4.5 stars

Entertaining and great performance, but sometimes the main character does something so stupid that, though I laugh, I have to remove half a star.

sophie Katz is my new hero!

This is my 2nd book that I have read in the series. I love this character and every one else in the story. Kyra Davis Has a special way to tell a story that keeps you engaged, has sexual tension, and most of all makes you laugh out loud.
