About this listen

Half-witch, half-mortal 16-year-old Sabrina Spellman has made her choice: She's embraced her witchy roots, and her power is growing daily. But will it come at too high a price?

It's not easy being half-mortal, half-witch. At least, not for Sabrina Spellman. She just discovered that her dad is Satan...and that it's her destiny to rule Hell.

As usual, Sabrina's got other plans for her future. She's figured out a way to trap her father...but he's caged in the body of her boyfriend, Nick Scratch. Now the love of her life is stuck in Hell...with Satan stuck inside him. Sabrina knows there's a way to get Nick back while also keeping dear old dad out of commission. She just has to figure out what it is. Unfortunately, her loyal cousin Ambrose is unavailable he's off hunting Father Blackwood, the evil former head of the Church of Night.

Fortunately, Sabrina's still got her mortal friends, Roz, Harvey, and Theo. So when her aunt Zelda now the church's high priestess mentions an ancient quest that might help open the gates of Hell, Sabrina and her friends are all in. But Zelda failed to mention that the quest has some perils of its own....

Chillingly Good!

LOVE this Sabrina Companion series by author Sarah Rees Brennan. I am a former young adult author & have long-admired SRB’s co-authored work with Cassandra Clare set in CC’s Mortal Instruments world (eg Ghosts of the Shadow Market, The Bane Chronicles, & Tales from Shadowhunter Academy—especially the latter two).

Rarely, do I repeatedly listen to, or read any book within a condensed time frame (sure, I revisit favorites every year, or few years) but since I listen to bits of the above-mentioned works almost daily, reading/listening to SRB’s solely authored work is something I approached with both excitement & trepidation.

Excitement because of my admiration for her co-authored work & trepidation because in well-done co-authored works, distinguishing which author wrote what parts is (or should be) difficult, or next to impossible for the casual reader. Thus, perhaps the *spark* I loved was CC’s? I didn’t know.

I’m delighted to pronounce Sarah Rees Brennan’s sole writing to be as sparkly Sabrina’s magic & Ambrose’s wardrobe. :) In my personal opinion, obviously, which comes from the perspective of having been a young adult author, critique partner/editor of a best-selling young adult author, and reader of approximately one billion trillion gazillion young adult books. (Yes, I can make up my own math numbers. I’m a writer. We make things up).

As a TV tie-in project, obviously, there is a framework & certain constraints, but as someone who also watched the series (asking my then teenage daughter “Why does Ross Lynch have the charisma of a rock in this? Did someone magic away all that charm & vibrancy he had on Disney Channel?” Answer: “Um, I think it’s called ‘acting,’ Mama.”), SRB did a GREAT job channeling the vibe of the show, while adding a lot of great quips and one-liners, and the narrators did a fantastic job on all the voices.

Actually, the narrators did an unbelievably fantastic job.

For someone who hasn’t watched the series, I think the large (kind of enormous, really) jumps in plot between the 3 books in this series would probably be disconcerting. I found it disconcerting, and I am a fan girl of the show.

Still, such are the necessary writing sacrifices required by the Dark Lord. Hopefully Sarah Rees Brennan’s head was adorned with an adorable headband, or a gold crown made of skeleton fingers when she made them.

Totally recommend this series to any Sabrina or SRB fans.

Not as good as the 1st 2 books

I am disappointed with this book especially after enjoying the 1st 2 books so much. This third book lacks the action, the passion and the spark of the first two. It seems to be non stop introspection & self analysis, a considerable amount involving one particular character who is not even the main character. These sections drone on and on & focus mainly on the character's frailties, inadequacies & self doubts. The overdone self analysis, & self criticism persists with the other characters but to a lesser degree. The dialog between characters is over dramatized & effects believability of ensuing action sequences. I skipped some sections to avoid boredom & the agony.
I did listen to the books back to back to back so perhaps I am over critical to some degree with my review because I perhaps lost focus or interest
