About this listen

From acclaimed poet and author Melissa Lozada-Oliva comes an evocative coming-of-age story of infatuation, belonging, and trust built and broken.

We meet our narrator hanging around the nail salon where her mother works, eavesdropping on her conversation with one of the regulars, Helen. But she’s really hoping to see Helen’s daughter, Patty - older, rebellious, and completely captivating. When Helen invites her over to their house to help organize a home office, she jumps at the opportunity. But as the day goes on, she encounters something she shouldn’t and gets caught up in the sinister nature of other people’s property and private lives.

Pool House is a haunting story about losing one’s sense of self and what happens when you look too far without noticing you’re being looked upon.

Terrible

45 minutes I’ll never get back. There was no plot, nothing was resolved . What was the story?

What Happened????

In my opinion the author neglected to finish the story. I have no idea what this was all about. I was intrigued with what was being woven but nothing happened. Nothing revealed. Not one damn thing - very disappointing.

Very confusing

It may have just been me but I was very confused about what was going on — especially the ending.

Good for a quick read

Melissa Lozada-Oliva is an amazing poet & I loved the way she narrated this. It almost felt like a rough draft of a psychological horror thriller. I liked it a lot, but I found myself not really *getting* it. I don’t think there should be or could be any definitive answers—that’s what makes books like this so good—but I feel like there wasn’t enough here to make any kind of theories or even to make something of it. It’s good for a quick read, but it just needs *more.*

More?

So I'm not really sure what the resolution should be for this story but it seems unfinished.

Felt like the story was going somewhere

And then it just stopped. Not sure why the author just stopped - seemed like it ought to go further, so while it was good as far as it went, it felt like it was missing a last chapger.

Haunting, dreamlike

An exploration of coming of age and the othering that is gift-wrapped tightly to the white liberal imagining of charity (instead of equity). Nightmarish imagery twists genre in this teenage vignette of culture clash, solitude, and respectability

Loved the narrator and hint of spookiness

Yes, the ending is a little different than what I expected, but I actually liked it. The narrator was fantastic and her voice fit the tone of the writing well, which makes sense since I believe she wrote it. I wish there was a little more at the end on what happened, but I also appreciate letting the mind do the wondering to decide. I wouldn’t listen to stuff like this all the time but it was a nice change of pace.

What’s this about ?

This feels incomplete and I don’t get it at all. The ending is so confusing and there aren’t any clues as to how.
