About this listen

The saga of Alvin Maker, set in an alternative version of the American frontier country, continues, in a tale full of folklore and magic.

Young Alvin returns to the town of his birth and begins his apprenticeship with Makepeace Smith, committing seven years of his life in exchange for the skills and knowledge of a blacksmith. But Alvin must also learn to control and use his own talent, that of a Maker, or else his destiny will be unfulfilled.

Critic reviews

"The most important work of American fantasy since Stephen Donaldson's original Thomas covenant trilogy." (Chicago Sun-Times)
"A beguiling book...[a] robust but reflective blend of folktale, history, parable and personal-testimony pioneer narrative. The series promises to be a story of deep delight." (Publishers Weekly)
"Card's epic tale of a magical, alternate America demonstrates his skill in graceful storytelling. Recommended, along with Seventh Son and Red Prophet, for most fantasy collections." (Library Journal)

Most Intense Maker Yet

I appreciated the tactful manner that this book addresses and portrays serious topics such as rape and racism. This entire series is written about a time in America where things were very different than today. I like that the MC appears to be more enlightened than many of the time. The story is engaging and makes me want to continue in the series. Card always gets great audio performances for his books.

Excellent!

I absolutely love all of Card's works, but so far, the Tales of Alvin are my favorite. I devour every word and marvel at how this seemingly living story could have possibly come from the mind and imagination of a man. I can't wait to find out how Alvin's world comes together! Excellent read.

Wow

Orson Scott card has taken what was already an amazing story and brought it to a new level by adding the dynamics of a small hometown five.

Alvin is growing up

Alvin is more mature, serious, and dark sometimes. It is good that Alvin looks out for the underdog.

I

Don't) like different narrators, I often find it hard to understand who is talking. Maybe a little harsh because they do it proper here, change narrator when point of view changes. So basically :
Go Alvin!

Weird but addictive

Any additional comments?

This series is super weird, but somehow just leaves me wanting more every time. Excellent reading of this strange tale by a great cast.

this likely should have been book 1

It took 2 books to get to the book that takes the titular MC for 10 to 19, but at least he is not a side character in his own series anymore. Also might need a trigger warning if historical accurate depictions of pre-civil slavery and race relations in an otherwise fictional world bother you, this might not be for you. With all that it is still a good book, and performed well as an audiobook.
