About this listen

This urban fantasy set contains the first three books of the Preternatural Affairs series: Witch Hunt, Silver Bullet, and Hotter Than Helltown.

My name's Cesar Hawke. I'm a witch working for a division of the government you've never heard about.

The world's not what everyone thinks it is - unless you think that our world's a pawn in a game of chess between Heaven and Hell, and riddled with as much magic and wonder as it is with evil.

In that case, the world is exactly what you think.

My place of employment - the Office of Preternatural Affairs - takes a modern approach to an ages-old problem. It used to be that inquisitors would burn demons and the people in league with them. Now we get warrants, perform arrests, put the suspects on trial, and send guilty parties back to the Hell from whence they came with the travel forms filled out in triplicate.

This stuff I do with the OPA, it saves lives on most days.

Most days, I said.

Good laugh and suspense!

I had originally purchased the Audible set after it being suggested; for being narrated by Jeffrey Kafer. So far all his books have been perfection; even after reading Kindle version and been disappointed. All the characters have their own singularities and emotions felt. You forget it's narrated by the same person. Awesome!!

The novel itself keeps you captivated throughout all three stories! I was thrilled when finding out all three novels were available!! Forget having or collecting different covers. I was instantly hooked!! I could imagine this "normal" world with people able to perform magic, and all the different weirdos that practice the occult. Having a special department to control those who practice magic, made it adventurous. I haven't checked out the next book in series. But, if it's like the first three, I would recommend as stand alone for teenagers or Young Adults. Thank you so much for this collection. The suspense kept you immerse in the stories; and César Hawke's allergies to magic was a trip! Much looking forward and getting ready for the next!

Different and Interesting...

The books reminded me of a TV Series, flowing nicely into each other. Alot of action and detail as well.

Enjoyable

Love the main character. Not macho but manly. The story moves along nicely, good chemistry between characters. Good narration.

Not Bad

I started this series with low expectations since I'd gotten the kindle book for free and paid $1.99 for the narration. I was pleasantly surprised. I would read the next boxed set of 4-7, I liked it enough. Unfortunately the cost is higher than my interest.

Character Flaw

Would you try another book from SM Reine and/or Jeffrey Kafer?

I would have liked the story more with less of his personal comments.
Girls, smart remarks, really a weak character.
I made it thru the 3 books,, but that is it.

What did you like best about this story?

The story.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Jeffrey Kafer?

His voice is good it was the character he was playing.

Did Preternatural Affairs, Books 1-3 inspire you to do anything?

Not to purchase anymore.

Any additional comments?

More story and less of the wise crack stuff.

Ok Action Story

Good if you are a plot oriented reader. Characterization is a little thin. The voice of the protagonist is made to sound like William Shatter doing a Captain Kirk impression. Yes, annoying! Otherwise, the story moves quickly.

Entertaining and creative Urban Fantasy

It feels a bit like the Dresden Files with some familiar tropes and archetypes, but it's different enough that I wouldn't call it a Dresden clone. Jeffrey Kafer is great as always. I haven't met a book narrated by him yet that he didn't make work (though I really wish he would work on his foreign accents a bit - still love ya Mr. Kafer).

This is my first book by the author, and I would say that SM Reine has some great creativity. I appreciate the novel supernatural themes, particularly the magic allergies, aspis/kopis binding concept, magical contracts, and different flavors of demon. These plot elements are well integrated into the story, and I could imagine playing a game that includes them.

The stories are really easy to get into, and they keep you hooked. There is a little bit too much "saved at the last minute", but that's pretty typical for the genre. The protagonist has strengths and flaws that are believable. There is only one werewolf and no vampires, which I am quite happy about because I am getting really tired of those tropes.

The reason I give the story 4 stars is because the book does suffer from some minor character issues that I find common in the genre. The male protagonist is a bit chauvinistic; the main female characters however are rather strong-willed and give him crap about it, though they are also concurrently in love with him. There aren't very many complex characters either. Most of the ancillary cast encountered are extremely one dimensional.

If you like Dresden, Iron Druid, Mercy Thompson, or urban fantasy at all, you'll be happy with the purchase. I'm really glad they decided to put the books into a collection as each story is rather short on its own.

Pleasantly Surprised

I found this trilogy to be worth every penny and more. It was action packed fast paced and very well written. I also think the narrator did an excellent job. I am looking forward to the next installment.
