About this listen

She talks to the animals. But when they witness a murder, who will squawk first?

Cursed and almost powerless, Jolene’s definitely down on her magical luck. Forced to disguise her taboo shifter abilities, she barely makes ends meet by working as a pretend pet psychic. So she eagerly says, "Oui," to a job securing testimony from a parakeet that watched a woman’s fatal fall.

Teaming up with a true blue police officer and his lie-sniffing German Shepherd, Jolene works hard to hunt down suspects. But with an after-hours affair, a disgruntled neighbor, and risqué photos all seemingly connected to the crime, untangling the truth is bound to get hairy.

Can Jolene protect her cover and pluck out the clues before she falls from grace?

Pretty Little Fliers is the first book in the delightful Magic Market paranormal cozy mystery series. If you like charming characters, picturesque French settings, and spellbinding twists and turns, then you’ll love Erin Johnson’s pet-friendly tale.

Cute and funny

I loved this first book in the Magic Market Series on the island of Bijou Mer where we meet Jolene, a down and out shifter whose been cursed by a former colleague. The curse took away her magic and outed her as an owl shifter. She lost her job as a lawyer, her fiance, and her life as she knew it all in one fell swoop. During a fake reading as an animal psychic and desperate to pay rent to her Dragon landlord in the Dark Moon District, she agrees to help a cop with his K-9 partner. It turns out the curse took everything but gave her the ability to communicate with all animals and insects which she disguises as being psychic. Peter, nice guy that he is, hires her to "read the mind" of a bird witness to a murder across the street. Thus begins Jolene's new job as a police consultant, now if only the shifter community that is described like the mob doesn't find out. The author's vocabulary of curse words is hilarious. Trust me, you will have shell of a time.

Good cozy mystery with a paranormal twist

If you are a fan of cozy mysteries and paranormal mysteries, you will like this book. First book in a new series. Building the characters and their stories. Jolene has been stripped of her magical abilities (shifter) and is trying to make ends meet as a pet psychic. Working and living in a night market, sharing a dive with some undesirable insects, Peter (a policeman) brings his very ill dog, Daisy to her to find the vet he has heard about. She then gets involved in the investigation of a murder across the street with the Peter and Daisy. Trouble is Daisy can tell what she is or was and is not impressed. But this may be her ticket out of her living situation. Will, a vet also in a similar situation and his coworkers make for interesting and likeable characters. Ready for book two!

Good Book to Entertain You!

This was the first Audible book I ever listened too! I decided to try and save my eyesight rather than reading into the wee hours of the morning. This is a cozy mystery and I wouldn't say it was "deep".....it's more of a fun book to read. It took me a while to get used to listening to someone else narrate the story. When I read a book I tend to make up how the characters sound and look in my head. However, the narrator is good and it's funny to listen to her interpret how a dog growls or a spider talks (next book). The author definitely paints a picture of the status or living state of the main character. I always found myself wanting to eat something or take a shower! LOL I picked up the next books in the series to see how the story continues. Now, if I can only figure out how to stay awake while listening to audible books!

A wonderful introduction to a magical new world

I love this series. Erin weaves a very compelling story as a fallen from grace lawyer now in a magical slum becomes a police consultant. It has the best parts of murder mysteries mixed with the best parts of a magical world. As a recent law grad, I also love the legal references. This mystery has a good hook and keeps you guessing along the way as interesting people are introduced. The story even gets around the gritty downside of audio mysteries by having its own local sets of curses so that profanity isn't off putting or even horrible. There is no traditional profanity and even my kids love to hear the story about Joleen :)

Pet psychic

A fun new series by Erin Johnson. I love the snark Jolene, the down-and-out former lawyer turned pet psychic, manages to dish out throughout the book, especially to Daisy. I'm looking forward to what book 2 has in store.

Great New Series!

This is the first book in a new series by Erin Johnson. If you are familiar with her Spells & Caramels series, you'll like this one, too. This story is also set in Bijou Mer, but shows a darker side to the city, as the main character struggles to make a living as a pet psychic. Although people through out the book keep calling her a phony pet psychic, she actually can talk to animals, a skill for which she is enlisted to aid in a murder investigation.

The story, in style, reminded me a little of Rachel Aaron's Minimum Wage Magic, although with a lighter tone. The narration and sound effects are great, and I think add to the story rather than being distracting. Very entertaining! Can't wait for the next one!

cute story

I enjoyed this little whodunit and really felt bad for the heroine Josephine. Her life really took a tumble, but hopefully in future books she gets a little redemption. I loved the H, he was sweet and affable. This was a quick listen, enjoyable. I was told only in the h's POV and is a standalone and beginning of series. looking forward to book 2.

A great start to a new series

If you loved the world of Iggy and Imogen then you will love this series. It is a whole new cast of characters but some you have met before. If this is your first book you have checked out by Erin Johnson then don't worry you don't need to have read her other series Spells and Caramels to enjoy this one. The narrator brought all the characters to life and has a pleasant clear voice that is nice to listen to. I look forward to the next book and highly recommend this one.
