Hat Pins - A Handy Weapon

A dashing Naval Captain comes to a woman's rescue while on shore leave. After saving her from the kidnap attempt, he becomes her bodyguard. The close proximity becomes more than simple protector and civilian. Each come to realize their feelings for the other, but for various reasons cannot reconcile actually taking the next step and become husband and wife. Through some more kidnap attempts and strained words spoken, they admit to each other that they are the one for each other.

I enjoyed the addition of Arnaud's crew to the bodyguard detail; they barbed their captain mercilessly. And Sophie's best friend Lydia was such a fun vivacious chatterbox that she had me smiling at her antics.

I listened to the audiobook and was enchanted by the dual narration. The narrators were lively and performed both male and female voices well.

A Regency Romance

This is the first book I've read/listened to by Andrea K Stein. It's not my normal romance trope, but I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. It was a nice diversion from contemporary and dark romances! There was a mystery with some action that had me holding my breath a couple times. Sophie was an intelligent and (for the time) independent woman. She made me smile often. Especially when she and Lydia were together. Captain Arnaud had to grow on me. Their behavior together often frustrated me. But we got a beautiful HEA. I'd most definitely listen to another in this series.

Arthur Rowan and Heather Tracy are excellent narrators. They were both new to me and I enjoyed their voices. Their performances had the book rolling like a movie in my head. I hope to hear them again.

Good Victorian Romance with Suspense

I don’t listen to a lot of regency romances, but this one was good and I liked that it had some mystery and suspense in it.  Captain Bellingham was on leave waiting for his ship to be ready and saves Sophie from an attempted kidnapping. After that, he becomes her bodyguard to protect her so it doesn’t happen again.  Sophie is a strong woman who can protect herself with a hat pin!  Captain Bellingham just wants to help and doesn’t want to fall in love and Sophie wants to meet a man that she can fall in love with and have a family.  This was a good story to listen to if you don’t want too much steam but want a nice romance and some suspense.  The narration was great and you could easily distinguish between all the voices. #AudiobookObsession #TheFlock #PinkFlamingoProductions

A hidden gem! Great Victorian romantic suspense

I am so glad that I discovered this author, Andrea K. Stein.  I love Victorian romances, and I have been waiting so long for a great new one in audiobook.  This book, “Pride of Honor”, really delivered an excellent story and an entire forthcoming series about Royal Navy officers to enjoy.  I had a couple of tiny complaints early in the book, but the excellent narration, surprising plot twists, deep friendships, wonderful characters, and romantic development all combined to make me love this book.

The heroine Sophie is an orphan who is about 18 who is under the guardianship of her best friend Lydia’s parents in London in the 1830s.  Her father was an Italian poet, and she is a poet as well.  A sudden and unexpected kidnapping attempt on Sophie was foiled partly by Sophie’s quick work with a hat pin and partly by Captain Arneau Bellingham of the navy.  Kidnapping attempts continue, and Arneau agrees to be the bodyguard of the beautiful Sophie.  Who is behind the kidnapping attempts and why?  It really kept me guessing.  The book didn’t have a dull moment.  I totally recommend this audiobook to all fans of historical romance.  FYI, there is a small amount of mild to moderate steaminess.  The story is told in third person mainly from the perspective of Arneau and Sophie but with a few other chapters from the perspective of minor characters.

I have a couple of tiny complaints.  I wish Sophie had a more consistently bold personality.  She is great at defending herself, but she also blamed herself for the kidnapping attempt, even though she had no idea why it had happened.  Also, Sophie early on feels “terror” at routine social situations and is constantly blushing.  It was slightly annoying, but she thankfully grew out of it and became a lovable character.  Arneau is a bit too stubborn and clueless about women, but that was okay.

I must sing the praises of the marvelous, delicious male narrator Arthur Rowan.  His voice is like warm caramel or something equally decadent.  His high-class English accent is perfect, and he is also talented at women’s voices and Scottish accents.  I love his sexy voice for the hero Arneau.  Arthur Rowan is one of the sexiest male narrators I have ever heard, and I am definitely looking for his other work.  I am also really looking forward to a future book with Arneau’s Scottish friend as the hero.

The female Heather Tracy did a pretty good job, but she made the heroine Sophie sound too out-of-breath and overcome with emotion when the text indicated otherwise.  She did a very good job with the men’s voices and the pacing.  She did a good job with the French accent of Arneau’s mother Honneur.

Good story, Just didn't hit me in the feels

I wasn't blown away but it was a pretty good story. I just don't know that it was executed well. The narration was good, but I think that there were parts that may have missed the mark. Sophie has to marry so that she can get her inheritance, but her parentage isn't great so making a suitable match is going to be tough. Captain Arnaud was in shore leave and ended up saving Sophie from being kidnapped. It ends up being decided that she needs a bodyguard, which being as independent as she is, didn't take to it that well. Arnaud falls for her but thinks that she deserves better than a man that will leave to go to sea for 18-24 months at a time. But he gets to watch her try to make a match with some other man. Jealousy is funny to watch. If you aren't looking for something too steamy I would totally suggest this. It's a bit frustrating at times, but a decent read/listen.

Sophie and her captain

I usually don't listen to Regency Romance , sometimes i find them boring. This story had me interested from the beginningRowan to end.
Sophie is a strong female lead, who is smart, intelligent. It is her time to find a suitable husband so she can receive her dowry.
There are dangers ahead, someone trying to kidnap her. The dashing Captain Arnaud Bellingham in the Royal Navy is assigned to protect her.
This story shows the sacrifice that Sophie is willing to make to save the people she loves. She realizes that she doesn't need her dowry or a man in her life to be happy.
This story has drama, intrigue, a mystery and danger.
Heather Tracy and Arthur Rowan narration is very good. They portrayed all characters with their own personalities and voices.

Regency Romance with mystery and suspense!

This was my first Andrea K. Stein's book, and won't be my last. This is the first book in the Men of the Squadron series, a Regency Romance. Sophie and Captain Arnaud‘s story is well written and captivating. The characters are well developed and interesting. The world building is complex and intriguing. I liked the mystery, the suspense, and the twists and turns. Heather Tracy and Arthur Rowan did an outstanding job with the narration. I enjoyed it, and I am looking forward to listening to more in the series. #TheFlock

Mystery portion well done

This delightful story is full of mystery, suspense and romance. While it is enjoyable I struggled to get into the characters and really feel the connection between the two main u til way later in the story. What I thought was well done is the mystery portion. I could not figure out the mastermind. Therefor the story was woven well.

I did listen to this on audio. The narration was well done.

Great Story

This is a very well written story filled with wonderful detail, and packed with drama, action, suspense, and, of course, romance. I absolutely love Arnaud and Sophie, and the secondary characters are terrific. Identifying who is trying to harm Sophie is quite a puzzle (I got it wrong twice), just the way a good mystery should be. Wonderful narration by Heather Tracy and Arthur Rowan. I thoroughly enjoyed Pride of Honor.
