About this listen

London, 1887

When newly graduated medical doctor Charlotte Duvall receives word that her father has died, she immediately leaves America and returns home to see to her family’s estate. Among her father’s possessions is a box of her late mother’s letters, which feels like a balm to Charlotte’s grief-stricken heart. But the letters contain some inconsistencies that suggest there was more to her mother’s death than Charlotte had been told. She turns to the one man she trusts more than anyone—her treasured friend and director of London’s police force, John Ellis.

John Ellis has harbored feelings for Charlotte ever since he first met her. Tucked into his heart are thoughts of her sharp mind, quick wit, and remarkable beauty. Though he has not yet found the courage to share his feelings with the young doctor, he is eager to help her in her hour of need.

Investigating the details of a death was not how Charlotte imagined she would find love, but as she and John work to unravel a dark web of secrets and lies, she finds herself relying on him more and more—and opening her heart to him in the process.

As the danger draws ever closer, John vows to do everything in his power to protect Charlotte from harm. But he fears protecting her heart might come at the cost of breaking his own.

Wow! Amazing finish to this series!

Please don't be put off by the change in Narrator!! I increased the narrative speed slightly, and it took only a few minutes for me to adjust to this new narrator. I soon realized she was very talented as she brought each character to life! She is amazing! This story is so compelling and exciting that I was entranced! I loved every moment as the mystery built and unfurled to an astounding finish! Thank you Nancy Campbell Allen for a fantastic mystery and beautiful, wholesome historical romance! Great series!!

Had a hard time adjusting to a new narrator

I wish I had noticed that there was a narrator change. It was not the same. I can’t blame the new narrator, it’s not her fault. I had a hard time getting into the story and it felt very slow. I finally sped up the narration and it helped. Just not as good as the first 2 books.

LOVED THIS BOOK!

Not read this author before, but LOVED this story AND the narrator. Both have become FAVS because of this winning combo. The story grabs you instantly and keeps the reader/listener guessing who the killed Kat, the mother of our heroine. Who's trying to kill our girl and why? DCI Ellis has a vested interest in this case. It's personal and involves three Members of Parliament. Excellent Who-Done-It.

Story was amazing!

I love this series, and this story was icing on the cake! I didn’t care for the narrator and wouldn’t have gotten the book if I had sampled it fist. But the story was worth it.

Plot is great, narration is mediocre

I really preferred Justine Eyre’s narration from the last several Nancy Campbell Allen books I’ve read. NCA always comes through with excellent plots and beautifully realized characters, but the narration on this book was mediocre at best and grating at worst. The narrator’s male voices especially were not up to par.

wonderful story, narrator change jarring.

I really listened to the series before I got to this new book. The other two books are written by the sameI really listened to the series before I got to this new book. The other two books are written by the same narrator. so it was a little bit jarring to hear the new narrator's voice. I was able to get over it after about 5 minutes because the story is just so wonderful and the narrator does a good job. they're just different.

the plot was good

the narrator really was terrible. And I had difficulty following the story line at times. It got confusing. Overall this book was just OK.

Great Story from Victorian England

The books in this series are enjoyable mystery and romances from Victorian England. I recommend Nancy Campbell Allen's Steampunk series, as well.

Great story, missed Justine Eyre:o(

Love the charecter continuation from the first two books and the plot was good, however without Justine Eyre it was too difficult to connect with John, Michael, Nathan, Charlotte, Amalie, and Eva:o( So, unfortunately, the first two will still be my favorite in this series!
