About this listen

Theresia Dvorak has nothing left of her parents—nothing save her dowry, a priceless crystal vase stolen and sold by her own stepmother. Theresia will do anything to secure what is rightfully hers—even assume a false identity and steal her future back. When she gains entrance to a house party and has a memorable run-in with the handsome navel captain Rolland Reese, her mission is compromised. She swore never to trust an Englishman again, but when he makes a daring proposal she cannot refuse, she must work side by side with him if either of them is to achieve their aim.

Rolland is stunned when his homecoming from the war takes a decidedly deadly turn. The quickest solution is to throw a house party and invite all the suspects. With the stakes incredibly high, Rolland must root out the killer before they turn their sights to the next potential victim: his own father. The mysterious Theresia is undoubtedly the most suspicious of his guests, but against all odds, he finds himself risking everything to protect her. As Rolland unravels a tangle of clues, he faces the greatest threats of all: a heart of fire and a future as fragile as glass.

I couldn't stop listening! I loved the suspense, and the sweet romance combination. I appreciate the clean humour attention to detail.

Mystery and Romance

This was a delightful surprise. This was a clean, well developed story. It has a good mystery with some twist. There is a sweet love story that develops beautifully over the course of the story. It has side characters that you start to love, and want to know more about. This is a story I recommend, and one I will be listening to over and over again.

Clean, with well developed relationships.

This is an entertaining book, an odd amalgam of Cinderella, mystery/spy novel, and regency romance. It has an edge of cheese to it that holds fairly steady throughout the book. Thankfully, that cheese more often tips towards humorous than eye-rolling. Theresia, for example, is ridiculously impulsive and naive, so much so that her attempts to break into the house to find her vase should have been cheesy and groan-worthy. Instead it had me cracking up, especially with Rolland’s response to her… Of course, the ending DID start to cross the line for me, to exceed even my cheese-tolerance, but hey, it’s the ending of a Cinderella, mystery/spy, regency, romance novel, so it’s kind of to be expected 🤓

Content:
There is no foul language or sex. There is some violence and a couple murders, but nothing gory or excessive. The romance is limited to mildly descriptive kisses. There are a few off spiritual comments throughout the book (like mentions of “the Great Spirit of old”), and an instance of fortune telling.

Entertaining with great narration

I really enjoyed this book, the love story was secondary to the mystery and the fact that it is sweet love story makes it good for all ages.

Good mystery

I love the characters of Theresia feisty and heroine and Rolland, too. It reminds me of a Cinderella story, I-loved it

Nice little murder mystery

Gypsy story with an air of post-war paranoia and distrust, with a developing love story thrown in for good measure. Narrator was good. The writing just didn't grab me. I finished it but was glad when it was over so I could move on.

Utterly forgettable
