About this listen

Poppy's dreams are finally coming true, until they turn into her worst nightmare.

When her new editor is murdered right next to her, Poppy knows she needs Ophelia's help to get justice for Ellie. The two of them quickly find themselves in the middle of a scandal rocking the world of professional chess that could lead them to the killer.

At the same time, Poppy is also trying to figure out how to work with her new editor who is convinced Poppy is going to fail, working on finding a new job, and looking for a new roommate. Not to mention, seeing where her relationship with Nick is going.

Oh, and she’s gotten herself mired in another case with Ophelia, And this time, Interpol is involved. All in a day’s work, right?

But as Poppy gets closer to finding the murderer, things are getting more dangerous for her. Will Poppy outsmart her opponent, or is she about to find herself in real-life checkmate?

The story of Poppy and Ophelia is a fun quick read. I love how they play off each other, it’s a perfect match for a late summer read. Ready for book 3.

Fun quick read

In books 1 and 2 Ophelia and Fiona are the characters to watch. Poppy is okay. Second book is better. Look forward to book 3.

Easy and fun. Fun characters and I enjoyed the double story line. Great book to listen to while doing other tasks.

So much fun

While I admire Jasmine Webb and Poppy the main character of this series, I really wanted to drown Poppy's mother. This heartless vampire was so over the top that she was almost unbelievable. What kind of parent would disown a daughter who refuses to go to law school? Most mothers would be thrilled to raise a healthy, responsible daughter with good values.

Poppy was relatable, willing to put in the effort necessary to become a published author in addition to helping to solve crimes with Ophilia, another fascinating female character. I like how Nick, the journalist who Poppy started dating, was a minor part of the plot - nice if things worked out but not critical to her happiness and long-term goals.

Jasmine Webb has created a great second book in her Poppy Perkins Mystery se. All the characters from the first book are present. I’m looking forward to the next in series.
Khristine Hvam, as always, gave an outstanding performance as she breathed life into the storyline and gave each character their own distinct voice.
I highly recommend this book/audiobook to cozy mystery fans.

Better than the first

Sassy prose and good characters make up for a somewhat thin plot. Fun book with excellent narrator

Smart prose good characters

I like the characters in general. Good narrator! Good dialogue. Some really solid potential. There are, however, some real obstacles. Not all policemen are bumbling, power hungry, inept egomaniacs. Lock picking isn't quite so easy. The climax was SO rushed. And the main character's writing? It fell off completely before the end. The Juliet arc is waaay too drawn out, with no satisfaction. To dedicate her book to the dead editor is ridiculous. The AGENT from the first book believed in Poppy, not the "met one time" editor.
This book leaves a feeling of dissatisfaction.
It's kind of like you were eating while not paying attention. Suddenly, you are finished, and you thought that there were a few bites left. An unfulfilled emotion. Just like how I felt at the end of this book.

A lot of potential
