About this listen

Mare Barrow's world is divided by blood - those with red and those with silver. Mare and her family are lowly Reds, destined to serve the Silver elite whose supernatural abilities make them nearly gods. Mare steals what she can to help her family survive, but when her best friend is conscripted into the army she gambles everything to win his freedom. A twist of fate leads her to the royal palace, where, in front of the king and all his nobles, she discovers a power of her own - an ability she didn't know she had. Except...her blood is red.

To hide this impossibility, the king forces her into the role of a lost Silver princess and betroths her to one of his own sons. As Mare is drawn further into the Silver world, she risks her new position to aid the Scarlet Guard - the leaders of a Red rebellion. Her actions put into motion a deadly and violent dance, pitting prince against prince - and Mare against her own heart.

From debut author Victoria Aveyard comes a lush, vivid fantasy series where loyalty and desire can tear you apart and the only certainty is betrayal.

Same Story, Better Writing

Why is this one at the top of the lists this year? Another class divided society, this one with silver blood topping the servile reds. Our protagonist from a hard-working, destitute family is nothing-special, yet feisty and bound for greatness (unbeknownst to her). This is the same story as so many others and seems to be the child of a "Hunger Games" and "Selection" mating.

Nothing new here except for three versus two boys in love with our heroine. The writing is superior to that of Kiera Cass' "Selection" series, but definitely not phenomenal; just better. Mare is easier to relate to than others, but not as magnetic as Katniss. The narrator does a nice job with inflection, definitely more relatable and not monotone. What you have here is a formulaic book one in the predictable, money-making trilogy publishing. If you're looking for a new YA action/romance tale of anarchy, this is a good listen. Just don't expect anything new or surprising.

Interesting story, but

I was disappointed in the slow and weak development of the heroine, and the constant romantic aspect of what could have been a great action story.

It was okay.

I struggled to finish this book. The story had a fair share twist and turns but it was very slow. I quickly got lost as some parts and had to go back and listen to it again.

A story to love

Mere is a great female lead. While she doesn't always do what you want her to be doing and defiantly is stupid sometimes, you can't help but love her. The love story is great because that's not her only focus. She isn't the love sick teen so many books are about. The story was amazing and I can't wait for the next book.

When is the sequel coming out? So so good, I can't wait to read more. Loved the characters and plot twists. Read like a really compelling movie.

Cool idea-Terrible plot *no spoilers review*

The concept and idea of this book is really cool. I kept seeing parallels to hunger games which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I didn’t absolutely love any of the characters. The two main male characters were SO BORING!!! They were set up to have a really cool position in the story but I feel like they have absolutely no personality. Also two male characters had very VERY similar names and when listening to who was talking I would get confused as to who I was listening too. Probably won’t read the next book.

Written like a middle schooler for a middle schooler

Light entertainment. Storyline interesting if you don't look at things too closely. Reads like the author tried to meld much of today's young adult novels into one, without the writing skill of the better authors.

Not sure I will read the next one. I definitely won't pay for it.

Unique story that keeps you guessing

I really enjoyed this book. I kept guessing what would happen next and I was never right, but each twist made sense with the rest of the story. The story it self was very unique and the characters were believable. The narrator did a great job, she separated the characters well with the way she portrayed them and made them seem very real.
