About this listen

Mare Barrow's world is divided by blood - those with red and those with silver. Mare and her family are lowly Reds, destined to serve the Silver elite whose supernatural abilities make them nearly gods. Mare steals what she can to help her family survive, but when her best friend is conscripted into the army she gambles everything to win his freedom. A twist of fate leads her to the royal palace, where, in front of the king and all his nobles, she discovers a power of her own - an ability she didn't know she had. Except...her blood is red.

To hide this impossibility, the king forces her into the role of a lost Silver princess and betroths her to one of his own sons. As Mare is drawn further into the Silver world, she risks her new position to aid the Scarlet Guard - the leaders of a Red rebellion. Her actions put into motion a deadly and violent dance, pitting prince against prince - and Mare against her own heart.

From debut author Victoria Aveyard comes a lush, vivid fantasy series where loyalty and desire can tear you apart and the only certainty is betrayal.

This story is great but it does have some slow parts. Overall loved it and loved the plot line. Can't wait to continue the story and find out what happens next.

Decent

This book is so detailed and full of great story that evolves so much throughout the book. It has a good ending so you could stop after this book or go into the next book in the series.

Amazing book

The first few chapters were slow. It didn’t really caught my attention until after around the 6th or 7th chapter. The book reminded me of The Hunger Games and I almost didn’t continue but when it started to get interesting, I was hooked and couldn’t put it down. It was hard to listen and I would sometimes need to go back to know who said what. The narrator sounded bland and boring. She tried to use different voices for some of the characters but it wasn’t convincing. Overall, I enjoyed listening to the book but I probably would have enjoyed it more if I read it.

Slow start but it turned out ok

Some parts of the story were cliche and/or predictable, but the overarching plot was laid out so I was on the tips of my toes a few chapters in.

Good read

I enjoyed this book, I actually read it a couple years ago and decided to listen to it to get back into the series. Personally, I don’t think Mare is very likable at all. She drowns herself in self-pity for the entire story, even when she is manipulating others or stealing other girl’s betrothed. She takes the ‘not like other girls’ trope to a whole new level with her super power thing. I’m gonna be listening to Glass Sword next and I’m really hoping it will introduce some new characters that don’t smirk, sneer, eye-roll, hiss, or glare every two minutes.

The performance is good, not great. There was a time she had to mimic an announcer and instead of adding extra enthusiasm, she just spoke slightly louder. But for a one person performance it was decent. Editing was great, no additional noises like pages turning or stomach growling.

I know this review makes it sound like I didn’t enjoy the experience at all, but as a whole there are some redeeming qualities. There is good world building, an interesting premise, love interests that the main doesn’t deserve, and the pacing could be much worse.

It’s got rebellion themes, a love rhombicosidodecahedron, and an evil witch/stepmother character. Give it a shot, why not?

Smirks and sneers and sarcasm, oh my!

The narrator voiced a few lines in a way that were a little distractingly off but each character was distict and the accents were great!

The story itself was full of surprises and refreshingly unpredictable. Even the lovers triangles were interestingly heartbreaking yet satisfying.

I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys an action based storyline

Ferociously good novel
