About this listen

Twelve-year-old Ji-li Jiang has brains, friends, and a bright future. Then Mao Zedong launches China’s infamous Cultural Revolution. Soon school is suspended and students are getting caught up in the fervor of Mao’s extreme politics. When Ji-li’s family is accused of capitalist crimes, all of her beautiful dreams burst like soap bubbles. Because Ji-li’s grandfather was a landlord, her family is harassed and humiliated. Their home is searched, and they live in constant fear. Nonetheless, Ji-li remains loyal to her beloved Chairman Mao and endeavors to "reform her ideology". But with her father’s detention, Ji-li is faced with the most difficult choice of her life.

Told with simple grace, this is the true story of a family’s courage in one of the most terrifying eras of modern history. Christina Moore’s moving narration makes the Jiang family’s saga unforgettable.

This is an informative book and makes me reflect on current political and philosophical censorship in our country. Although it may have different sources… it exists in our culture anytime people don’t feel safe to share their opinions and views. People can lose their jobs or licensure for have dissenting opinions from society’s current political and philosophical flow.

Informative and cause for reflection

This book is important for everyone in the free world, as well as others. It shows the inhumanity of any type of dictatorship. It shows how no one is served well by Socialism or Communism. This is a true story of a girl who lived it. She had no desire to question her leaders, but even when she complied, her and her family were punished for deeds of her grandfather. This should never happen!

An important look into Communism and Socialism

I was interested to see how human thoughts, emotions, relationships are largely universal.

Also provides a good view of what can happen under Marxism.
