About this listen

Lauren Voss has a nice, quiet, orderly life running her grandmother’s Heron Bay Resort on the Texas coast. Three years removed from a break-up that left her ex - and her life - behind in San Diego, she’s adjusted to the slow pace in Rockport, seeking out neither new friends nor lovers. Vandalism at the resort’s clubhouse - and a cryptic message written in blood - brings Detective Harley Shepherd, with her obnoxious Hawaiian shirts, into her life.

A tragedy sent Harley Shepherd running to the sleepy fishing village of Rockport, where violent crime is rare. So different from her life as a homicide detective in a large city, she embraced the quiet and easy-going attitude of the town, determined to put her past behind her.

Was it luck or fate that had her catch a case of simple vandalism? The lovely Lauren Voss made no attempt to hide her dislike of both her - she reminded Lauren of her ex - and her Hawaiian shirts.

Was the vandalism a prank, as Lauren suspects? When a body is found floating near the resort’s pier, Harley is convinced it’s related. As the formality and animosity between them changes and a friendship forms, the women find themselves growing closer as a killer terrorizes the peaceful town they both now call home.

First, Abby can tell a story. When I purchase audibles, I look for Abby's name. Second, Harley was so real. Her character seemed so believable. She was cool under fire. I'm falling in love with the women in uniform. Keep it going Gerri.

Another Good One

Abby Craden was meant to read Gerri Hill's books. However, I caught myself not overly liking the accent for the main character. But I Loved the book & cant wait to get it in paper form too.

One of her best works

It just didn’t flow. I think a good proof reader would have spotted the issues. Gerri Hill one of my top two authors and Abby is the best but while a good read, too many inconsistencies. That said, it’s still a held my attention.

I have never met a book written by Gerri Hill and narrated by abby Crade, that I didn’t love, and this one is not different. I loved it. The suspension made listening to this book wonderful. The characters are love able and believable.

Okay, the best part is the slow-burn romance brewing between the drawling detective, Harley, and beautiful Lauren, the standoffish manager of her grandmother’s quaint resort cottages, Heron Bay (a striking resemblance to the real Pelican Bay cottages in Rockport?). Lauren appears to be in the serial killer’s crosshairs after the Heron Bay clubhouse is vandalized and a threatening message is scrawled in blood there on a mirror. You can almost smell the salt in the breeze and see the flaming bougainvillea at the small resort. Flirty Hawaiian-shirt clad Det. Harley arrives to investigate the vandalism, unaware that her resemblance to Lauren’s nasty ex is what’s fueling Lauren’s antipathy towards her. Add one headless corpse floating off Heron Bay’s private fishing pier, numerous shrimp dinners during the investigation, a terrifying break-in of Lauren’s cottage in the middle of the night, another hideous rape/murder nearby, Harley’s RV home being torched, then Lauren finally jumping into Harley’s arms and you get yet another excellent Gerri Hill novel with equally great narration by Abby Crayden. I was very sorry when this intriguing tale ended. Gerri Hill’s books just keep getting better and better.

A serial killer/rapist taunts a very attractive, but grieving detective in a quiet little town on the Texas coast

Loved both of these characters. The story was well developed and interesting. I highly recommend.

Another great one from Gerri Hill!!

This one took me a bit longer to listen through because of the crime aspect and the darkness of the plot. I like action, but not the ominous type of plot like in this story. I had the “oh no’s” throughout most of the book and then the “don’t do that stupid!” , moment during the climactic scene. Abby Craden was her usual great except I wasn’t in love with her voice for Harley. Overall it was good, but not one I will listen to again so not a 5 star rating.

I am not as big a fan of the murder mystery books
