About this listen

Discover the beauty of second chances at love and life in this heartfelt new novel from New York Times bestselling author Mary Balogh.

The Dowager Countess of Stratton, Clarissa Ware, née Greenfield, has just presented her younger daughter to the ton, and the rest of her life belongs only to herself. She returns to Ravenswood, intending to spend the summer alone there.

But the summer has other plans for her.

Born a gentleman, Matthew Taylor has chosen to spend his life as the village carpenter. Growing up, he and Clarissa were close—dangerously so, considering his family’s modest fortune. As a young man, he never would have been a suitable match for the daughter of the wealthy Greenfields. Clarissa married Caleb Ware, the Earl of Stratton, so Matthew married another, though he was widowed soon after.

Now everything is different—Clarissa has already lived the life expected of her by society. And Matthew is as attractive and intriguing as he was when they were young. As their summer friendship deepens into romance, they stand together on the precipice of change—essentially the same man and woman they remember being back then, but with renewed passion and the potential to take their lives in an entirely new direction.

Sweet Second Chance

Though a little slow, this sweet story is a wonderful continuation of the family saga. I’m sure it can be read as a stand alone, but it’s probably best if read/listened to after at least the first book. RL is as usual a brilliant narrator. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

The Long awaited Book…

Ordered mos ago,7th Jan publish date seemed so FarFar away, as I wound up the Series The all important Matriarch’s story ,must be heard. Loved entirety! Read “Comments” & total letdown anticipated, BUT, just completed & disagree. Perhaps age appropriate, life exp has much to do my liking in-depth explanations of being SoulMates, their choices & happenings past 30yrs. The factors do culminate in cherish findings, 4th phase characters embark so beautifully, Red Door Worthy too.

Roslyn Landor gave another wonderful performance.

roslyn Landor gave another wonderful performance. I was really looking forward to this story, as I have loved all the other books in the series. As a woman of about the same age, some of the story spoke to me, but it just didn’t have enough excitement. I love this author, but this is not my favorite. I think it just needed a little bit more of something, and I was very happy in certain parts, it just dragged a little bit in places. I will continue to read everything I can by this author, as she is still one of my absolute favorites.

Loved It

I am in love with this series and this book. I am not usually one for second chance romances or for “mature” love interests, but I absolutely adored this book. It is now my favorite of the series. I will definitely listen again. Clarissa’s and Matthew’s story was simply wonderful.

Not a lot of excitement.

This didn't give me the excitement I usually expect from this series. I was hoping for more bang with the conclusion of this book than I felt. The story was not disappointing in itself, but for some reason, it didn't have a hard punch, considering we are seeing The Dowager Countess get her happy ending with the man she should have married years ago. I was happy to see that her family supported her heart's choice and showed a good level of understanding in her choice. All in all it's a nice ending for her story and I was happy with the HEA. Yes, I'm glad I used the credit for the book.

Great idea for a story, but not at all Mary Balough's best; much too long

It's not terrible, but definitely not Balough's best. Read other series and earlier books in this series first. Otherwise you probably will write her off as not worthy of continued reading. As almost always, Rosalind Landor was a wonderful narrator. As a mature widow with grown children, I very much appreciated the storyline. However, the story was interminably long. I lost patience and finally breezed through five chapters to get to the final two.

Not my favorite

I was so waiting for the next book in this series….. but this one fell short. The storyline was flat and repetitive, no real climax. I feel her story (the way it played out) could have been a side plot as part of the other characters stories!! Not enough substance! Always love the narrator though!

I almost died of boredom and I like Mary Balogh

The likes first. I like her books because she usually does a good job of creating longing and stories that touch the heart. The concept was good. I even relate to the characters. I’m the same age in similar circumstances so it should have resonated. I liked this family arc but this story flopped. It was long and drawn out and completely boring. No conflict or drama or events I even remember. It read like the boring diary of a genteel lady who does nothing but drink tea. The conversations were tedious and there was no build up of anything. It read like “i don’t know, maybe, I’m bored so let’s get married” I can’t believe I didn’t like it because I was prepared to but I found myself forcing myself to continue listening to it like a chore. It was like a boat ride on a placid stream with identical trees on the side and no sound or anything interesting to look at. Ugh.

Cringey

I am a huge fan of the author, the narrator and the previous books in this series. I greatly anticipated the release of this one. I really tried to love this, but I just did not and could not. The illustrious Rosalyn does her level best to narrate and she is not any part of the reason I disliked this book in particular. Mary Balogh wrote it with the same dreamy prose that she is famous for. I liked Clarissa from the previous tales. I think what made me slam the book closed and run away was the descriptive detail when two people who are 50+ become romantically involved. The foreshadow of what I was in for was enough. I just could not go there with them. Their first kiss made me dry heave. This may be a personal problem, but there it is. They may never consummate their “friendship”, but I’m not brave enough to find out. Suggestion would be better in this case. “Then they closed the door behind them. When he emerged the next morning, his smile challenged the summer sun.” That kind of thing. Maybe Mary had mercy and made him impotent so they would have a warm, affectionate hand holding type of love. I’ll never know.

Unfortunately, a bit boring

I was really looking forward to Clarissa's story, but it turned out to be not as exciting as I had hoped it would be. It didn't grab hold and capture my attention. In fact it was more on the boring side. I still enjoyed the story, but was a bit let down. It was an interesting storyline but in my opinion was written a bit too much on the soft side. I had expected a few fists to fly, but alas, no. Learning about Matthew and Clarissa's backstories was the better part of the book. To me it was a lovely and sweet story, but slightly boring unfortunately.
