About this listen

Passion and scandal collide in New York Times best-selling author Julia London's brand-new series about four sisters determined to rescue themselves from ruin....

Desperate times call for daring measures as Honor Cabot, the eldest stepdaughter of the wealthy Earl of Beckington, awaits her family's ruin. Upon the earl's death she and her sisters stand to lose the luxury of their grand home - and their place on the pedestal of society - to their stepbrother and his social-climbing fiancée. Forced to act quickly, Honor makes a devil's bargain with the only rogue in London who can seduce her stepbrother's fiancée out of the Cabots' lives for good.

An illegitimate son of a duke, George Easton was born of scandal and grows his fortune through dangerous risks. But now he and Honor are dabbling in a perilous dance of seduction that puts her reputation and his jaded heart on the line. And as unexpected desire threatens to change the rules of their secret game, the stakes may become too high even for a notorious gambler and a determined, free-spirited debutante to handle.

The trouble with the story

the trouble with this story is that Monica, her family and Augustan appeared so often in the story. They spoiled the story and contrary to other reviews I see nothing wrong with Honor. I think the author focused two much on trying to ruin the two main characters instead of developing there story. it's like the author decided to take her anger out on Honor and George while exalting the two protagonists Monica and Augustan

Funny, romantic & exasperating

This book was a great tool in reuniting me with Julia London's work. I read her books years ago ad enjoyed them greatly. While the story line and the narration were wonderfully entertaining, I often found the characters maddening, especially Honor & her sisters. Many times in the listening, I became so frustrated, I wanted the story to end. Speaking of endings.....what the hey????????

Definitely a different kind of love story

This is definitely a different kind of love story. It's not hard to imagine why Honor and George are attracted to each other. Honor is, in her own way, just as daring as George. But there is a point where it's hard to understand why they keep coming back together. But what I love about this book is the multiple plot lines going on at the same time. It makes the story that much more interesting.

Excellent story!

The heroine, Honor, has enjoyed a pleasant life filled with parties and fashionable clothing since her mother married her kindly stepfather. She is not particularly interested in marriage due to an unfortunate experience a few years back, but she loves her family, including her soft-hearted, but easily influenced stepbrother and she is happily content with her life in the ton. The problems arise when her stepfather’s health takes a turn for the worse & her mother begins to exhibit signs of dementia. Honor’s stepbrother has become engaged to her arch nemesis, Monica, who has a very unpleasant mother. There are indications that Monica is influencing her stepbrother to banish the sisters and their mother to an obscure town in Wales when his father, the Earl, dies. That would mean a considerably less comfortable life, and Honor’s younger sisters would not have the opportunity to make their debuts & find good matches. Honor comes up with a scheme to thwart these plans by having George Easton (H), a notorious rake, seduce Monica and thus delay the marriage and its dire consequences for her family. That’s where fun begins! What I liked about this story is that Honor, the heroine was not perfect. There were little glimmers of arrogance and selfishness in her personality. I also like the fact that Monica, the supposed villainess, was not all bad. She occasionally showed flashes of empathy and genuine concern for Honor, and in the end saw through her mother’s manipulations. I like the way the book kept my interest throughout. It wasn’t predictable. Just when I was sure the plot was going to go one way to reach the HEA, it took the exact opposite direction, but managed to achieve the requisite HEA anyway. I definitely recommend this book and look forward to the next one in the series. A comment on the intimate scenes for those who like steam & those who prefer to avoid it: There were a number of erotic scenes. They were well done. The scenes had a natural quality with plenty of foreplay and none of that “let me teach you all about sex”arrogance from the more experienced male, and no hint of trendy dominance/submission thrown in out of context. The only thing I didn’t like was that the hero didn’t take any measures to prevent pregnancy (a pet peeve of mine) especially when he didn’t think he would be able to marry the heroine. That kind of concern is always a point in a hero’s favor, no matter how much of a rake he is.

Liked it!

Good passionate story with excellent narration. Recommended for historical romance enthusiast. I liked that this is not a typical rich hero gets the heroine. Both protagonist have their own struggles.

Narrator made the story.

The storyline was good. It went on a little bit too long were the hero with severe about his money situation and his title situation or lack of. However, when the story started to come together, the second half it was very interesting and entertaining. Let me just say that the narrator could read a telephone book she is that good
