About this listen

Report from Engine Co. 82 is the story of one company of New York firefighters battling unimaginable death and destruction every day. Dennis Smith worked as a firefighter in the South Bronx, New York City, and the graphic detail and gripping prose of this firefighting classic drives the most important, accomplished, terrifying audiobook ever published on firefighting. This book struck a nerve within the nation when it was first published 30 years ago. In our troubled times, it gains even greater resonance for those trying to make sense of the deaths of so many New York firefighters on September 11, and for those inspired by the tireless work of firefighters and other rescue personnel in the aftermath of the destruction. Dennis Smith describes the bravery, heroism, camaraderie, and unflinching courage of New York's bravest, demonstrating how firefighters everywhere have become the most respected of American heroes.©1972 Dennis Smith (P)2002 HighBridge Company Historical Sociology New York City

As a Young Firefighter it's amazing to hear stories from the war years. This books puts you in the rubber boots, rubber jacket, leather helmet and no airpark ways of how firefighting used to be. Every Firefighter should read it.

Truly a heartfelt story, one after another. Thankful to be a firefighter, to hear such uplifting stories, to remind us why we do it.

Amazing story of the brotherhood.

Every time I have read this book… And now I have read it multiple times and now listen to it once… It brings me down to earth, centers me, and humbles me, it reminds me why we do what we do… And we’re not as bad ass as we think we are… These old guys were doing it for real for a long time

Humbling….

This book gives you just a glimpse of what the firehouses were like back then. From gripping accounts of the fire lines fighting fires and getting your turn on the knob to the connections and learning that occur around the kitchen table. Dennis Smith also shares the toll on the soul that falls outside of those hours on duty.

Fantastic read

The author tells a riveting story and accurate account of the firefighters experience. This should be required reading in the schools, so bored and unruly kids can learn about the consequences of their unconscionable actions.

Riveting

Read at the recommendation of my mentor. With 6 years of emergency services experience I found the narrative given to be accurate in the relentless nature of a busy station in a busy place. Credit due to those brave brothers doing the most for people that are often seen the least

Great perspective from a seasoned FF
