About this listen

Through Old Testament Eyes is a new kind of commentary series that illuminates the Old Testament backgrounds, allusions, patterns, and references saturating the New Testament. Bible teachers, preachers, and students committed to understanding Scripture will gain insight through these rich Old Testament connections, which clarify puzzling passages and explain others in fresh ways.

The images of Revelation—like a seven-sealed scroll, four horsemen bringing destruction and death, locusts from the Abyss, and more—often seem hopelessly complex to today's readers and have led to egregious misunderstanding and misinterpretations. But as Tremper Longman demonstrates in Revelation Through Old Testament Eyes, this confusion arises from unfamiliarity with symbolism that Revelation's first readers readily comprehended. In large part, the imagery arises from first-century AD Greco-Roman culture and from the Old Testament, with its own background in ancient Near Eastern literature. Through its unmistakable Old Testament connections, Revelation exhorts readers to persevere in the present and place their hope in God for the future.

Avoiding overly technical discussions and interpretive debates, Revelation Through Old Testament Eyes combines rigorous, focused New Testament scholarship with deep respect for the entire biblical text.

Excellent book

The content of this book is superb, helpful and insightful. I highly recommend it and have found none like it. Longman is a world class OT scholar but also a very clear writer.

The raa EA adding is for the most past quite good, with one comical exception: he, countless times, reads “David” when the printed book says “Daniel”, in references to verses in Daniel. It’s not a problem, just a surprising lapse in quality on Audible’s part.

Still highly recommend.

narration needs to be improved

The narrator mispronounces and misreads a ton of stuff. one example is at the end of the chapter "Revelation 1" he says the reference is found in in "David" instead of "Daniel". Enjoying the book otherwise, but it's super frustrating to listen to sloppy narration

Whenever the subject gets to the conversation of wealth and consumption in the nation, almost like a well oiled machine , the backpedaling and hemming and hawing around reality begins. The Boomer generation unequivocally owns the title and the deed for over consumption of material wealth in excess, without limits flipping the language over to “blessings from God” as wealth being an indicator for one’s success in the eyes of our Almighty God. This nation is the epitome of idolatry on the highest levels . IT IS not a thing that is difficult to understand that this No longer United States nation is the very Babylon spoken of in Revelation and IT rivals any nation of all sins and tops them off by margins unprecedented. This IS THE CATYLYST AND THE KICKER FOR THE DECEPTION that the father of all lies known as Satan has hoodwinked this culture … God bless

He doesn't get it.

He has the wrong approach to the Old Testament. This leads to the wrong approach to the New Testament.
He is placing the church in Israel's position. His take on symbols and images is way off because of it.
It is a frustrating book to listen to because he is getting so much wrong.
Sorry, stay away from this one.
