About this listen

Lois Letchford’s dyslexia came to light at the age of 39 when she faced teaching her seven-year-old, nonreading son Nicholas. Examining her reading failure caused her to adapted and change lessons for her son. The results were dramatic.

Lois qualified as a reading specialist to use her nontraditional background, multicontinental experience and passion to assist other failing students. Her teaching and learning have equipped her with a unique skill set and perspective. As a teacher, she considers herself a “literacy problem-solver”.

Reversed: A Memoir is her first book. In this story, she details her dyslexia and the journey of her son’s dramatic failure in first grade. She tells of the twist and turns that promoted her passion and her son’s dramatic academic turnaround.

Heartfelt

The young boy’s struggles in reading and writing reminded me of my struggles in school. Never give up. I fought to earn my masters degree and currently I am a special education teacher.

Lost me over one line

While Lois shares an incredible story of a mother’s love and a son’s journey to academic success, I found myself cheering Nicholas on and applauding her efforts to learn. However, I completely disengaged over one line towards the end when Lois finds it necessary to share her husband’s invalid and outrageous opinion regarding 9/11; the strength of our towers and questioning the foresight of our engineers. From a loyal American, kindly keep your opinions to yourself regarding our National tragedy. It has no place or merit in this novel yet detracts for any American who has a connection to the great loss our country experienced.
