About this listen

A United States senator is murdered on the floor of the Senate by an invisible assassin; a French nobleman in Jerusalem during the First Crusades gives rise to a new order, the Knights Templar; a creature of dark mythology becomes the power behind the Third Reich. Three supposedly unrelated events weaving their way through the corridors of time as if by no reason or rhyme. But what if all these moments were connected through the incredible exploits of one man? An immortal man destined to battle evil throughout the ages!

A surprising new discovery.

I took a chance on this one not knowing what lay in store inside. I was pleasantly surprised to find a rivetting tale and iinnstantly likable characters. If you like pulp dadventures with a few twists , I strongly recommend this one. J Scott Bennett's narration coupled with Mr Fortier and Mr Samon's writing make it an unforgettable ride for sure.

Lot better than I expected!

What made the experience of listening to Rise of the Black Legion the most enjoyable?

I was a little put off at the very beginning of the book with the narrator's voice and I think it had to do with how the story pacing as well but soon I was all in! Narrator's voice made the characters come alive and helped me "watch" the movie unfold.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Alan Hale is definitely my favorite character in this story. He was right there in your face kind of guy. Do right by him and he will do right by you. The kind of guy you like to hang out with and shoot the breeze.

What does J. Scott Bennett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

When the story got to rolling along with action, Bennett brought it!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listen to the audio books when I'm out walking the dog. A couple times my dog would sit down and not want to walk anymore and I realized that it had been well over an hour walking, just didn't notice. I wanted to see what was going to happen next!

Any additional comments?

Great action packed pulp story

This is a fun entertaining good vs evil pulp audiobook that would make a great movie. It is an enjoyable fast paced story with plenty of action, suspense, good humour and some great fights. The narration by Scott Bennett fits this book perfectly, he gets the different accents just right and you can feel the humour and visualise the images in your mind as he narrates. You cannot help but be enthralled by the immortal biblical leader, the sexy magician and the lighthearted flyboy, as the Ghost Squad battles the evil of Nazi Germany and then discover whom the real mastermind behind the evil plans is. If you are a pulp fan, you will really enjoy this entertaining story.

Action Packed

Take four uniquely qualified individuals, throw them together and you get an edge of your seat listen.

This book is action packed from start to finish as these four agents go up against the evil organization, The Black Legion, a subsidiary of the Third Reich during WWII in the 1930s.

J. Scott Bennett brings each character to life in this wonderful story by Andrew Salmon and Ron Fortier

I haven't read much pulp but if this is what I am missing, I want more.

A Story that Grows on You

Overall, I enjoyed this book though I found it a little hard to get into it at first. The writing was detailed, which I appreciate, but the combination of the rather soft narrator voice and somewhat stilted passages, at times, made my attention wander. However, the concept was interesting and the various elements involved (narrator, tone, pace) gelled more cohesively after the somewhat, to me, rocky start. I'd certainly read something by these authors again!

Adventure, bit of mystery, lots of action

It took me a little while to fully get into the book as there is a lot of back and forth story building happening in the beginning. Once the story is set though, the book starts moving like an action movie! There was also quite a bit of humour and wit in that I wasn’t expecting. There is a nice reveal at the end of the book that I thought was pretty nicely done. I loved the characters, especially Hale. There is a nice afterword that explains how the story and characters came together and I know I definitely want more from this series!

The narration here started off ok, but got really good as the story rolled along (I probably just needed to get used to Bennett’s voice?). I think my real issue was in one of the first scenes I wasn’t convinced by one of the accents. However the narrator completely redeemed himself by later brilliantly doing a dialogue scene in a hanger where each character had a different accent, and not only were they convincing accents, but he kept them straight through the dialogue back and forth. The narrator also did a good job in the action scenes, which helps immerse you in the story.

This story is a hoot!

Okay, this book was a hoot! It is done in the style of the Dick Tracy stories of the 30's and 40's. Once into the story it was thoroughly engrossing. I am going to be looking for sequels. Really, this is a very entertaining story. Immortal good guy, immortal bad guy, invisible assassins, the whole nine yards. Think Indiana Jones with a team.
