Publisher's summary

This book is Chopper's redemption. It is the real story of the man, the criminal and the prisoner, told with black humour and surprising insight. "This book is about my journey through the Australian prison system. You'll have heard a few of these stories before, but not like this. It's a step-by-step history of my twenty three years behind bars; what day to day life was really like in jail, what I did to survive and why I'll never go back. It's not a nice story. I was not a nice prisoner...

Mark "Chopper" Read is over 50 years old and has spent almost half that time in prison. He is a man who knows the Australian prison system better than any other. He knows how the definitive school of hard knocks turns juvenile delinquents into hardened criminals. How it feels to be thrust into a world of violent psychopaths and be changed, irrevocably, into the worst of their number. He also knows how it feels to pull out a man's colostomy bag (like a rope going through a barbed-wire fence). How it feels to lose your ears to a prison-issue razor blade (a gurgling sound like a little brook). How it feels to fight, maim and mutilate to stay alive. And what it means when that way of life no longer makes sense.

Road to nowhere

What did you like best about Road to Nowhere? What did you like least?

I liked the anecdotes. I disliked the rediculous accounts of beatings where the victims take the beatings like a super hero.

What did you like best about this story?

Interesting characters

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No

Any additional comments?

Not a bad read. Can't really relate to a morally bankrupt criminal

Spellbinding

I enjoyed this book and also the narrator did a marvellous job. It was violent in some places, but overall it kept me listening to the end to find out how thngs unfolded.
I would like to hear more stories of this type.

Classic Chopper - I didnt want the story to end

My only criticism is that it was not long enough. I could have listened for another 20+ hours. His life story fascinates me. I have read all his books and watched the movie and have not been disappointed once. The book gives the reader a glimse into prison life that should be enough deterrent for anyone contemplating a life of crime. Although brutal at times, there are some stories that had me laughing out loud at Chopper's retelling of the event. It is short at just over 5 hours, but absorbing from beginning to end. If you enjoy this subject matter, this is a must listen!
