About this listen

Paradise is rocked by the mayor's untimely death in the latest novel starring Police Chief Jesse Stone.

The town of Paradise receives a tragic shock when the mayor is discovered dead, his body lying in a shallow grave on a property on the lake. It's ostensibly suicide, but Jesse has his doubts...especially because the piece of land where the man was found is the subject of a contentious and dodgy land deal.

Two powerful moguls are fighting over the right to buy and develop the prime piece of real estate, and one of them has brought in a hired gun, an old adversary of Jesse’s: Wilson Cromartie, a.k.a. Crow. Meanwhile, the town council is debating if they want to sacrifice Paradise’s stately character for the economic boost of a glitzy new development. Tempers are running hot, and as the deaths begin to mount, it’s increasingly clear that the mayor may have standing in the wrong person’s way.

Critic reviews

"Lupica successfully captures the cadences and banter of Parker’s crime fiction....Parker fans won’t be disappointed." (Publishers Weekly)

"Lupica seems thoroughly comfortable carrying on the fictional lives of Robert B. Parker's characters. He has the jaunty tone down pat, and everything flows from that with Parker's people." (Booklist)

Another Jesse Stone Mystery

Another Jesse Stone Mystery

Mike Lupica carries the baton in this continuation of Robert B Parker's Jesse Stone series. Predictable and cozy.

Good narration.

Still not as good

This book by Mike Lupica is a little better than the last one. At least the language was not as bad. I still don't like it quite as much. The characters don't seem quite the same.

Great story & a fun ride

This is a well written caper for any fan of Parker’s Jesse Stone series.
Mike Lupica writes an interesting story, staying true to key characters, while throwing in a couple nice surprises.
Nice to see a returning visit by an old friend or two!

James Naughton does another fine audio performance. He should continue his run.

Sadly, I’ve given up on the (Parker) Spencer novels written by Ace Adkins. He’s gone ridiculously “woke” with the latest story. Robert Parker never let trendy politics affect his work, and I’m sure he’d frown at it now.

However, Mike Lupica can be topical & current without heavy-handed preaching or step-in-line politics.

Enjoy this ride… it’s great fun.
I can’t wait for the next one!

Great story-fairly believable

James Naughton nails this. The only unfortunate thing about reading Parker’s books, heavy on narrative, is the hundreds of time you hear “Jesse said”, “Molly said”, “Suit said”.

Another Jesse Stone classic

One of my favorites of late, although they are all good. This one had a great story line along with ties ins from the past. Love to see Crow back but I’ll leave it at that and let you read/ listen for yourself!

Always entertaining!

The Stone series has only gotten better, and the latest story is a reliably compelling read.
