Fun cozy mystery featuring a nerdy detective

Robot Revenge is the second book in J. J. Chow's Winston Wong series. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. I had not read or listened to the first book in the series. In Robot Revenge Winston, his girlfriend Kristy and his sister Marcy become involved with a neighborhood watch group, a much debated Halloween block party and murder. Bill, the captain of the watch, is a brilliant but curmudgeonly old man who rules the neighborhood watch with an iron fist. Some neighbors had grudges against him, some wanted things from him. But who would have wanted him dead?

There were many things I enjoyed about this book. Winston himself is a fun, nerdy character. I hope the author continues to develop and give more depth to him as the series progresses. Kristy and Mary were enjoyable supporting characters. I especially enjoyed the big sister-little brother rivalry between Winston and Marcy. The mystery itself was unique and well thought out. Humor, an all important element for me, was sprinkled liberally throughout. The tone of the story was gentle, fitting the book snugly into the cozy mystery category. Noah DeBiase, the narrator, used good tone and inflection throughout the book. I felt his voice was a good representation for the story and especially for Winston.

I had one pet peeve throughout the book. As I said, I didn't read the first book in the series and I felt that Chow could have done a better job of introducing the characters and their backstories for new readers. After finishing the book, I still don't really understand what Winston does in the computer world. Something about video games and a YouTube channel. I would have liked a little more info on that. However, it was not enough to spoil my enjoyment of the story and I'm definitely thinking about going back and listening to the first book in the series and future installments.

Delightful cozy mystery..........

Robot Revenge is the second book in this series featuring Winston Wong, but the author introduced plenty of background, and I had no trouble picking up the story line. Winston is a forty-something professional gamer with a sideline in senior sleuthing. He takes a case from one of his neighbors to investigate the disappearance of their neighborhood watch captain. Said neighbor returns unharmed from an unplanned trip but later falls to his death, and Winston is sure he was murdered. Using the clues he gathered while investigating the supposed disappearance and with the assistance of his sister, his girlfriend, and an innovative robot, Winston quickly wraps up the case. The guilty party and the motive took me by surprise, so that is the sign of a good mystery. While the mystery was plenty interesting, it was Winston's peppy personality that truly made this book a winner.

Noah DeBiase is a new narrator for me, and I would gladly listen to another of his performances in the future. He has the perfect upbeat voice for Winston, and he used the right emotion level for every scene. He differentiated well between characters, and his delivery was flawless.

Robot Revenge

A short cozy mystery with a techie twist. I missed out on the background of the characters by starting with this second book in the series, but I was able to follow along without too much trouble.

J.J. Chow has written a well thought out story with some twists and turns to keep you guessing. Noah DeBiase’s narration was great for these characters.

The robot did it.

his was the first book i have read in this series. It was a little slow at first but picked up as the story went along. First the neighborhood watch captain was thought to be missing and Winston takes the case to find out what happened. The neighbor returns home but later winds up dead after what appeared to be an accidental fall. Or was it. Winston and his sister work together piece together clues as to what really happened. The police say it was an accident but Winston feels differently.

The narrator did a great job. He has a fantastic voice.

Love this “new to me” series!

This was the first book I listened to in this series and I LOVED it! Winston (the main character) is so perfectly written & narrated; he’s got spunk, and lots of charm. His sister comes to town & she has even more spunk and humor. Together the two of them investigate a suspicious death in their neighborhood. All the characters in this book feel so well developed, and even though I just met them, I feel like I know them. That to me is the mark of a good story. Further, the mystery itself is enjoyable and quite a challenge to solve. 5 stars all around!

A Fun Cozy Mystery With Great Characters

I was pleasantly surprised with Robot Revenge: A Winston Wong Mystery Novella. At first I thought it might be too techie but it wasn't. It was a close knit neighborhood watch group trying to solve a mysterious death in the neighborhood. Winston Wong just happens to build robots. One of the members of the group turns up dead. He could've been murdered or just fallen by accident. I enjoyed the character development with Winston, his sister, and friend. They were well-developed and likeable. While this is book two in a series I found it easy to follow without listening to book one although I would like to follow this series. It was fun and easy to get into. A light and enjoyable cozy.

The narration was perfect. Noah DeBiase had great voice inflections and gave a fun voice to Winston.

Great squeal to the world of Winston Wong

Another entertaining causal mystery book featuring Winston Wong. I enjoyed the description of all the neighbors and was able to visualize all of them in my head. The story was entertaining but not too deep or complex. I am looking forward to more books in this series.

Neighours Can Be Deadly

When the eccentric leader of the neighbourhood committee dies in a mysterious accident, Winston Wong is determined to find out what really happened but with the devious, duplicitous and decidedly odd inhabitants of this neighbourhood, piecing together all the clues might take a little work and a lot of help from unexpected sources.
Lighthearted fun and an intriguing plot with a bunch of interesting characters.
Perfect for a lazy afternoon's entertainment.
