Publisher's summary

The mountains and forests of Washington State harbor a secret. It has remained hidden for millennia. An apex predator that has mastered the art of the hunt. Intelligent... savage... destructive... and now, gone rogue. It no longer sticks to the shadows. The hunt is on, and we are its prey.

Nina Lee is a Forest Ranger assigned to numerous missing persons cases across Mount Rainier National Park and beyond. She knows some come up here to disappear. And she knows most will never be found. But something has changed. Reports of a killer bear and the arrival of an undisclosed government agency have the community on edge.

As brutal murders and home invasions implicate the work of a criminal gang, her father suggests something else is behind the killings. Something from her past – from all their pasts. And it wants revenge.

In Rogue, legend comes to life. Don’t miss this killer bigfoot story. And don’t go camping alone in the Washington woods."

Not quite what I expected

The author here moves from the big cats of his previous three books and into hardcore cryptozoology territory. That, in itself is not a problem in my mind. I was, however, a bit thrown off by the whole "clandestine black ops" type of unit of Bigfoot hunters. Now I have no issue with the idea of such a premise or storyline, I was just surprised to see it here. The previous books having been quite a bit more grounded in everyday reality with only the odd evolutionary leap, and not a particularly large one at that.

I see now that this is the beginning of a new series of stories that push what we view as reality quite a bit further than before. I can get behind that. The writing is very good and pretty darn realistic. The author still has his penchant for describing every piece of technology down to the model number. All in all a fun book that I would recommend.

If you’re a believer

Really great book if you believe in Bigfoot. Totally believable in how the animals would live and interact.

Nothing Original...well 1 thing

Really nothing but a rip off of a bunch of Cryptid novels that came before. The only thing a little original was the dark help they get.

Good story,

This book was a good read. I enjoyed the plot and the multiple perspectives of different characters. I would have liked more character development. You knew who the characters were but not enough about them to care if they were injured, etc.

the smooth beat of the story. Plenty of suspense that was not rushed and laid out in a logical flow.

I like the language of the story telling. Appropriate words were used , and only when it was in good order for the story were lofty words used. Great story!

Excellent, but lacking just a little atmosphere

I simply love a good old monster story, and Rogue by Luke Phillips was surprisingly good and interesting. The narration was solid, and most of the main characters were memorable, making the story engaging from the start.

So, why only 4 stars? The book had excellent pacing for the most part, but around the 60-80% mark, there is a lull where things seem to drag on with not much happening. It took some of the momentum away from an otherwise well-paced adventure.

Considering the setting, I also felt that the story could have been a bit more atmospheric. There were moments where fog and the forest closing in on the characters were mentioned, but I would have loved to feel more chills during these scenes. For instance, I’ll never forget how The Void by Greig Beck made me feel like I was right there with the characters in the fog, fighting for survival. Rogue had potential for that kind of immersive tension but didn’t quite deliver.

This was my first book by Luke Phillips, and he’s clearly an accomplished author. I’m excited to dive into more of his stories and see what else he has in store! The narration by Talon David was top-notch too.

Trash

Not worth spit! Probably the worst in 20 years of listening. A refund isn’t even appropriate

Could have been great…

A monster thriller with a lot of potential. Unfortunately, all that potential remained unrealized. Several of the characters came off as corny and unrealistic. For example, if you saw your friend of many years, get torn apart by a Sasquatch, would your next move me to make a dumb pun. This happens repeatedly.

I don’t think it was fair for the narrator either she tried her best. Her narration did not do the story any favors. Would not recommend to any male readers who have ever actually handled a firearm before. You can tell the story was written by someone who has read about firearms, but most likely never held one.

Finally, the female protagonist is not the most likable character. I’m pretty sure she only wanted to kill the Sasquatch because he was male if you get my meaning.
