Former US naval officer Jake Slate is on a downhill slide into alcohol, self-pity, and rage. A decade of life as a mercenary submarine commander has left him exhausted, bitter, and utterly disgusted with the world. When a drunken brawl leaves his opponent dead in the parking lot of a seedy bar, Jake needs to run away. From his crime...from his country...from himself. For international arms dealer Pierre Renard, Jake's meltdown couldn't possibly have come at a better time. Renard is planning to start a war against a major European military power, and he needs Jake Slate to light the fuse.

Jake is still dealing with anger issues (yet his HIV issue seems to be all but ignored by now).
Renard is still the cigarette smoking weasel we know about, with his ego seeming to grow each novel.
Olivia is finally back, but little has changed for her either with her eyes still set on obtaining the throne of the CIA (also little to no mention of her HIV).
By the ending, not much if anything changes, they fight cunningly, win heroically, and gracefully say good by and return to their lives. All in all a rather basic story, but one I still enjoyed listening to.
Moderately good in tone and action.
