About this listen

All's fair in love and work. The first stand-alone romance by New York Times best-selling author Christina Lauren (Beautiful Bastard) is a sexy, compulsively listenable romantic comedy that dives headlong into the thrill and doubt of modern love.

Despite the odds against them from an embarrassing meet-awkward at a mutual friend's Halloween party, Carter and Evie immediately hit it off. Even the realization that they're both high-powered agents at competing firms in Hollywood isn't enough to squash the fire.

But when their two agencies merge - causing the pair to vie for the same position - all bets are off. What could have been a beautiful blossoming romance turns into an all-out war of sabotage. Carter and Evie are both 30-something professionals - so why can't they act like it?

Can Carter stop trying to please everyone and see how their mutual boss is really playing the game? Can Evie put aside her competitive nature long enough to figure out what she really wants in life? Can their actor clients just be something close to human? Whether these two Hollywood love/hatebirds get the storybook Hollywood ending or just a dramedy of epic proportions, you will get to enjoy Christina Lauren's heartfelt, raucous, and hilarious romance style at its finest.

The narration took me out of the story

I listened to the audiobook of Dating You/Hating You and although I thought the voice of Carter Aaron was fine, the voice of Evie was loud and grating and did not suit my vision of the character. It made it hard for me to enjoy parts of this book because her voice became a distraction.

This book takes place in LA, where two Hollywood agents are forced to compete for the same position after their firms merge. This, after meeting at a party where they hit it off right away. The tension is high. There are some kisses, there are some pranks.

However, the book at times focused more on the difficulties of a terrible boss and work environment than the romance, which I was absolutely fine with. Seeing a certain character get their comeuppance is a very satisfying part of the conclusion.

Like other Christina Lauren books, I feel transported to the city I am reading about. In Love and Other Words, I was taken to Napa and the Bay Area and in Roomies, it was the bustling energy of New York City’s theater scene. Here, I was taken to Los Angeles and into the world of high power agents in a cutthroat environment. It made for some high tension office dynamics and an ultimate workplace romance.

Sexy work romance w/ big humor

Sexy & fun work romance written w/ sharp humor & characters I cared about. I got increasingly invested in their LA entertainment industry work lives as the story progressed.

Boring

I expected much more but was pretty disappointed. They could have done way more with their love story and at least ended it in a more exciting way.

Another great one!

Christina Lauren hits it out of the park again. Carter and Evie are absolutely great together. CL has officially become an auto-buy author for me. They can do no wrong.

Annoying female narrator

What did you like best about Dating You/Hating You? What did you like least?

It was a cute idea for a love story

Would you recommend Dating You/Hating You to your friends? Why or why not?

Not the audio version! The female narrator, Shayna Thibodeaux, was incredibly annoying. So much so that it ruined the book for me. The story might have had a better chance with someone else. I could not stand how she read every sentence the same way... all through the book! I was hoping it would get better but it didn't. Add in the wang she has in her voice and I was terribly distracted. I like Christina Lauren. I read the entire Beautiful series, it consumed my life, so this was terribly disappointing.

Would you be willing to try another one of Shayna Thibodeaux and Deacon Lee ’s performances?

Deacon Lee was great. Perfect for the part. Not Shayna Thibodeaux. I don't know if it was just this book she read this way. I would sample another book read by her but hesitate to purchase it.

Did Dating You/Hating You inspire you to do anything?

No.

Any additional comments?

I am so glad I am done listening to it. Which kind of breaks my heart. Each chapter that switched from Deacon back to Shayna made me cringe. Her impersonation of a males voice works well as a teenage boy.

Cute.

This is not my favorite Christina Lauren creation, but it was worth the price of admission and it did make my "To Be Read Again" pile.

Give me hot office drama

What can I say? I love these woman's stories! Characters are real, and funny, and you can see it all go down as it's happening. what's better than meeting someone you really want to get to know better and than find out the same person is going to be your arch rival at work. The sabotage starts, so does the hanky panky. So great!!!
