About this listen

Delilah and Gavin's new love is threatened by a force uncomfortably close to home in this haunting novel from New York Times best-selling Christina Lauren, author of Beautiful Bastard.

His shirt is black, jeans are black, and shaggy black hair falls into his eyes. And when Gavin looks up at Delilah, the dark eyes shadowed with bluish circles seem to flicker to life.

He lives in that house, the one at the edge of town. Spooky and maybe haunted. Something worse than haunted. And Gavin is trapped by its secrets.

Delilah and Gavin can't resist each other. But staying together will exact a price beyond their imagining.

bizarrely entertaining!

Great visual narrative, easy to place myself in the wierdness, felt the visceral grossness and smelled the fresh cookies.

this is a horror story for the ages.

the fear I felt while reading this book was so intense I had to take mandatory breaks to remind myself that my OWN house wasn't sentient. This book pulls off the mixture of Horror and romance so very well. Gavin and Delilah are two protagonists I won't soon be forgetting, and neither will you. Delilah's fiery spirit and Gavin's slick coolness make them unique personalities that are unforgettable.

The Narrators Saved This One for Me

I generally don't do thrillers or suspense books, but Deacon Lee is my favorite narrator so I decided to give it a listen. It was about as plausible as a cheap horror movie, and I liked it about as much as one, but the Narrators were fabulous, and made me keep listening until the end.

Better for a younger person, 20-ish.

It was hard to really start it. after the 1st few chapters, it started getting better. Then you could start to understand what the book was really about. Had several spots that were hard to place what era this was in, the 60's or present time. After they found his birth certificate, you finally find out. Overall, it was an ok story. The last four chapters were the best, though I think the final chapter needed more of what did happen to his mom. Was she the one Lila had seen when she was trying to get out of the bathroom?? It needed more substance.

Spooky!!!

Would you listen to The House again? Why?

I would totally listen to the house one more time, and I’d tell all the people to accompany this book with the audio.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Deacon was a perfect Gavin, his voice translated his personality, his happiness, fears and especially his fears about everything what happened to him.

Have you listened to any of Elizabeth Louise and Deacon Lee ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I’ve listened to other audios with these two narrators, and somehow they reinvented themselves in The House.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Just the thought of listening all the spooky moments and also the action at the end of it, made me want to start it all over again right now.

Any additional comments?

BOOK AND AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: 5 STARS

Every now and then I like to get out of my comfort zone and read something different. This time it is the turn of Christina Lauren’s new book: The House. I have to confess, I was afraid to read it, but not because of CL’s writing, because I know they are great at it, but because I’m a chicken about HORROR, when I’m watching a horror movie I have my eyes closed half of the movie, so can you imagine how I could read this book? OMG! I was scared to death half of the book, but I kept going because the storyline was so interesting, all the suspense and romance - because yes, there is romance in this book -, and mystery around The House was really spectacular.

This book tells the story of Delilah and Gavin. They had a huge crush on each other since they were kids, and when Delilah was back in town, they started dating, but when all the “normal” stuff of boyfriend & girlfriend had to happen, like meeting the parents and such, that’s when all the suspense started. He didn’t have a normal family, he didn’t live in a regular house, but despite all these unusual - and scary as hell - facts about him, Delilah was always there for him, she accepted everything and tried so hard to find a balance between all the craziness around him.

I was a roller coaster of emotions while reading this book. At first it was so cute, how they started dating, their first kiss, how upfront was Delilah and how unfiltered was Gavin. It was all pretty and nice to read. Then it became more intriguing, when Gavin took Delilah to his house for the first time, or when he wasn’t recognized by the delivery guy from the grocery store. But when “things” started happening to Delilah I WAS REALLY SPOOKED!

It was so cool reading a strong leading girl in this book. Delilah wasn’t only determined to have a relationship with Gavin, no matter how scary things were around his house, but she also was determined to have HIM forever. I loved how she handle everything at the end of the book. She was the heroine of the story and I’m so happy to say that they had their HEA, which was unexpected for me.

Meh....🙄

I'm a fan of Christina Lauren's work, having read all of the Beautiful series, which I loved, but this one was a flop for me. Very odd and almost juvenile. Not sure if maybe she was going for a more "young adult" thing on this one but it just didn't do anything for me.
